Trailer Alignment Issue???

JWB475

Question

Wondering if anyone can can shed some light on this one for me...

I have one tire on my boat trailer that is wearing unevenly on the inside. The tires are about two or three years old and I do not trailer the boat very much - they are Goodyear Marathons.

The right side tire looks practically new. The left side tire has about 50% of the tread wore on the very inside edge.

I pulled both hubs and inspected/repacked the bearings. The nuts came off without any effort on both tires, but there was no wobble in them at all that I could notice. The seal was actually bad on the good tire (glad I checked them both), everything seemed fine on the bad tire.

Can a misaligned trailer cause uneven wear on one tire? I would think if it were misaligned I would have uneven wear on both tires.

What do you guys think?

Thanks,

JOHN

My trailer tires both wore on the outside. The trailer is only a year old. The dealer told me that they pre-load the trailer expecting a certain amount of weight. Apparently I need to put more gear in the boat when I trailer.

LOL! Tell your dealer to stick it.... Unless you remove everything from the boat and put it in the truck, not much more weight you can add with a boat, tank of gas, batteries and tackle that would make that much of a difference and not be lugging around useless junk you don't need and hurting your vehicle performance.

JW,

Here is what happened with my trailer..

4 years ago I came home from Vermilion and one of my bearings went out on me. I had to have it replaced and got it home. The guy who did it seeemed to do a good job but a few weeks later it went out on me again. I too had the wear on the inside of my tire and had to replace that tire every year while my passenger tire was always brand new. Early last year I took my trailer into Krem er trailer and they said that my spindle was bent and pitted and since it was welded on I had to have my axle replaced. Well I got my axle replaced. It helped with the tire wear but it is not gone. I then got to thinking and about 4 years ago I also got stuck at a ramp(catch and release bass lake in Oakdale) and when I pulled out of the ramp I was stuck in a hole and it bent my rim. I suppose that is where all my problems started showing up. everytime I had to replace that tire the guys at the tire shop always said it took them forever to get that tire balanced. I am going to replace that Rim this year and see if that helps. My guess is it will. I would maybe check your rims to see if they are bent or if you can remember if you may have bent that rim. Or thrown on your spare and see if it has the same issues. Hope that helps.

Thanks for the info/tips/advice... Wish I would have looked a little closer at the spindle when I had the hub off. With everything all put back together I can't notice anything out of whack with it...

It is a Shorelandr Trailer (2003), if the spindle is bent I think you have to replace the entire axle. I don't trailer very much so I am going to keep an eye on it to see how quicky it wears down before I consider replacing it. I put the good tire on the bad side so I can keep an eye on it.
