Kettle river this weekend?

I don't know what regional forum to post this on, so I'll just ask here.

I was just invited on a guys' trip to raft the kettle river, I'm not sure exactly where we're putting in and where we're taking out, but it's a day trip. I think we may go all the way to the St. Croix?

Anyhoo, I was thinking of bringing along some fishing gear and seeing what there was, but obviously since the season is closed for the bigger predatory fish, I need to figure out what I can use and what I should be targeting.

So.. What's in the kettle that I can target right now? Should I try fly fishing with a popper/dropper setup for panfish, or use small crappie grubs, or go with a crawler on the bottom? Or something else?

yes, that dependable crawler. you cant go wrong. realy not much you can keep as far as game fish. there are smallies there and some nice ones along with walleys and of course those big sturgeons. catfish, pike, maby a musky, and all the rough fish that you want. i would bring your crappie stuff just in case. other than that enjoy the views and relax. nothing wrong with sitting on shore with a slip sinker and a crawler as mentioned and going after some catfish. that would be some good eating in that water. most game fish are closed. to me catfish is a tasty meal. good luck.

We used to make a point of running the Kettle during high water every year. In 2001 we wound up running out of dry clothes just below Big Eddy, had to huck a good mile back up river carrying our canoes and kayaks to the campsite just below the eddy. We each brought two changes of clothes in dry bags that year too. Luckily my buddy's dad worked for the State Parks and was able to unlock a couple gates to access the campsite and pick us up, otherwise we would've been SOL.

We always launch at 48 and go down to the St. Croix from there. Personally, I'd just focus on paddling and see the sights, once you get into St. Croix State park its a pretty fun ride. When the flow is over 10' below sandstone, it gets pretty fast through the park, above that it's slower.
