Loud Washing Machine

Recommended Posts

I have a top load Maytag Performa washing machine that makes a loud squeling/thumping noise on the wash cycle. It also sounds like it's having a hard time churning the clothes and wants to bog out. I've never worked on one, and just wanted some possible solutions before I dive into it. Thanks.

Could be couple different things. Could be as simple as bad belt. If it is a constant noise while washing, probably has bad water pump. Can tip machine back, take belt off, and spin pump by hand and see if that is the noise. If washer makes squealing noise when it stops spinning, its the brakes, which are internal in the transmission and not worth fixing. Or there is bottom pulley on tranny that goes bad quite often too.

If it is a one belt washer I would not spend too much money on it. Take the belt off and spin the water pump pulley, the motor pulley and see if there is any resistance. If they move smooth try turning the main tub pulley clockwise. It should move pretty easy. Counter clock wise is spin but that is not the problem you are having. Could be the belt but if it is there is a good chance something wore the belt down. If you post the model number I might be able find the service manual online for it.
