Flyfishing this time of Year?

Just wondering on how effective flyfishing is this time of the year? I just really got into flyfishing the last few years and I am itching to get out soon. Just want to know what early tactics you pros have that you can help a newbie like me out with. I don't need your hot spots, just what kind of flies/lures work well this time of the year prior to the opener. Thanks again.

I've generally had good luck so far this year with small 20-22 midges, and orange and pink scuds. Im sure in the coming weeks once the majority of the water is fishable, many guys will be throwing BWO's. I've also heard of some people nailing fish on wolly buggers.

Bead Head Pink Squirrel. My go-to fly when nothing is happening on the surface. Pheasant tails are also hard to beat, as are prince nymphs. Both bead head (starting to see a pattern here)? If the water has a little more color to it, I always enjoyed throwing cone-head buggers down and across. Its almost always good for some vicious hits.

You should always be prepared for midges and BWO this time of year, as well.

Good luck
