Clear coat on decoys?

Recommended Posts

I was wondering if any of you ever put a clear coat over your decoys to protect the paint finish. I've got a brand new set of canvasbacks that are already scuffing up and they haven't even seen water yet. Any insight into what might work would be appreciated. Thanks!

I touched up some decoys this winter and was going to try to protect the paint. I used the krylon with a matte finish. I used it on one decoy and there was a glare when compared to the others.

Well I've used clear epoxy (devcon 2 ton is what I use, but most 30 or 60-minute epoxies work) on wooden lures, it'd probably work on decoys. You'll want a constantly turning drying wheel to get an even coat.

Sorry for the delay. Yes, these are GHG's....I thought about something matte finish in Krylon but even then they still have a sheen to them. I'll have to try out the devcon 2-part as I have some laying around. I appreciate the tips guys.

Ok here is the problem with coating problem paint.

If it is coming off and or chipping it will continue..

Imho.. is to strip, prep and repaint.. I posted on the new home made gear thread how I handle plastic decoy repaints..A textured plastic decoy is easy to repaint and you can tweek them a bit...

I do use cc947 clear coat from auto value with extra flattener on my decoy bills with very good results. If you prep a plastic right you can use a variety of paint on the with lasting results...
