Bassmaster Classic Coverage

KickNBass

Recommended Posts

Watched the first day of Classic coverage yesterday and was really dissapointed at how little footage of anglers fishing there was. I really don't need to watch Zona and his side kick talk about the fishing in the studio, I want to see the anglers apply their skills, and not just the catching fish shots, i like to watch them cast and work their lures. See how different they are from me...

Anyway, I decided I would time how much footatge there was on day two as I watched it today...it was much better today, of course they had two hours so they had to show some footage...

So, I figure the number of minutes of actual fishing I timed is probably accurate to +/- two minutes.

Have a guess at how many minutes in a 2 hour show is fishing footage? Post your guess then look below for the answer...

The number of minutes I timed is shown below in between the letters kv and d.

I'm kind of surprised it was that much. Too much fluff put into tournament tv nowdays. I'm not impressed with the cartoon animation shots of the underwater world. On a positive note, I really liked the SI view they gave of the area where it was won. Bring back Bob Cobb and the "how to" section of the bassmasters!

Oh my god is Zona one obnoxious man! The faces he makes at the camera and the gestures he does after interviewing guests make him look like a 12 year old. Can't stand that guy. I'm just about to watch day 2 coverage, I was really hoping for more than that amount of fishing coverage since it was 2 hours and day one was a let down in that respect.

I think Zona is great. Better than a boring guy talking all the time. He tries to make it a little off the wall. And I hated the old FLW coverage. They showed the weigh-in and then the next week the showed the actual fishing. I think this classic was challenging for them since most guys were so spread out. And on the first day when you have 50 boats hours apart, that makes it tricky. Day 2 they had a better idea of where guys were going...

For those of you wondering about the opening montage, here it is...if you want to put yourself through the agony of watching.

I was actually to the point where I was yellin 'stfu' at the T.V. One of the most annoying intros I've ever seen. It's like they went to Call of Duty on XBOX Live and found the most annoying 12 year old they could and then had him put that thing together. 2 1/2 minutes of guys screaming was excessive to say the least.

I presume you were yelling STFU on beat with the "never give up?"

I was. Oh man... I woke up at 4:30am and could not fall back to sleep, so checked out what was on. Oh, fishing? nice. Then saw that intro and decided trailer park boys on netflix was a better idea.

It was.

Alright, so I'll weigh in... I actually don't mind Zona, in fact I think he's a good bass fishing TV personality. He keeps it real.

That said, the coverage could have been much better. A few ideas:

1. The in studio analysis should all be outdoors! Even if the launch is quiet during fishing hours, that will help the audience feel more involved.

2. Don't just focus on the top anglers... Ride throughout the pack. I am just as interested in seeing some guy in 40th place who ran out of gas running 100 miles downstream...

3. Use technology better... they could do so much better as far as having more cameras in boats, underwater video (maybe not this location), matching up sonar images, etc.....

KVD and Martins bantering back and forth...... HILARIOUS! Good luck next time Aaron.

Oh ya might want to worry about what you are doing not what everyone else is.

That was pretty funny, that would be so frustrating to be Rook and Martens a casting distance away watching KVD shatter records and win his 4th. Martens had an awesome first day but had to battle in day 2 and his confidence plummeted but I guess it's hard to feel real confident when you've come runner-up 3 times at the classic.

He even said he was using the wrong rod. Everyone else was using a soft graphite or a glass rod with those cranks. And the two guys I saw using stiffer rods (Martens and Palaniuk) both lost some good fish.

Yeah, the one Palanuik lost was a nice one! He seemed like a pretty cool story. What did he finish, 4th? I recorded it on my DVR but it was running 15 mins late so I didn't catch the final 15 mins.

Worst. Opening. Ever.

The balance of the coverage was pretty good though. I agree with the poster who suggested that they find a way to utilize fishing technology in the broadcast.

I was lucky enough to fish the everstarts with zona and he is one of the nicest guys you will ever meet. Also one of the funniest. He is also one of the best fisherman in the world. I dont think he ever sleeps either.

I didn't know but I assumed he had to be a fisherman since he broadcasts the events. That's good to hear he's a good guy! I had just finished the day one coverage and he was making a few obnoxious faces and weird gestures while interviewing guests, and it just seemed out of place. I later watched day two and three and he didn't seem to bother me as much. I can see the guy not getting any sleep though, seems pretty amped up!
