Do Augers Spook Fish?

They did a test of this a few years ago on one of the fishing shows. They had a diver go under the ice with a sound meter. The spud bar almost made his eardrums explode and was by far the loudest. The power auger was actually quieter than a hand auger by several decibels.

The local CO pulled up to a near ice house yesterday afternoon about 60' away. Just then the bottom 4' of my flasher filled up with fish. The CO then drove his sled right up to my portable (On ice with no snow cover) and them fish made a mad dash out of there....20 fow

I've had many times where the fish haven't cared about noise either.

Good to see the CO out and about!

I have speared on winnie for many years and have noticed the pearch have moved out of the hole before you hear a snowmobile coming. A 4 wheeler can come right by the fishouse or another fisherman can be drilling a hole close by and the perch stay in the hole. My thinking is the exaust from a snowmobiler is close and directed to the ice, about 4 ins., and the pounding, noise or vibration directed to the ice scares the perch. I think where the exhaut is located is the villian.

Never ever have I seen fish on a camera or flasher bolt when a auger was started up! NEVER!

I guess I have only experienced the fish that I seem to believe matter. How long it lasts with my experiences? Minutes to about 15 if they are in the area, but good sized panfish or walleyes in under 15' will spook or shut off during and right after an auger hole drilling session to open new holes.
