Dial-up App?

LMITOUT

Recommended Posts

Can a person still get a dial tone on Verizon by typing in #777?

It seems that is where the issues lies. The flip over from digi to analog. I figured there would have been some kind of an IT app, as with most anything fun, once Apple found out the Netshare app was more than just a WiFi/DUN/USB tethering app, they dueced it. frown I have read though, the open source is still going and Android picked up on it.

Yes PI & RuKiddingMe.

I was reviewing that discussion last night also PI. I know LIMIT was asking for an easy quick install app, but there are ways a making this work but takes going to the Da Root though! I figured he was not interested.

RuK as time goes on, analog gets phased out ever so more. Actually many of the good answers I have found come from back in 2003-2007 when this more commonly requested and involved Black Berries, but the tech had not caught up. Now the tech is here, but the request dropped off the page as this would be consider a rare request. grin

Out of my quest because I am a networking fool, I just bought the $15.00 app PrintBureau and the $5 app Save2PDF.

EuroSmartz the developers of Print & Share and the above apps I feel have the solution with in their apps. One of the plu-ins for the Print & Share app has this option with only a couple of the features listed:

Yes PI & RuKiddingMe.

Actually the answer is no.

Those are the same methods we've been talking about that are used to obtain internet on a PC such as a laptop using your cell phone, i.e. tethering. While this is close, I think that after everybody went digital they don't even bother offering the dial-up option anymore. In fact, my PDA-net has no options at all except if you want to use bluetooth or USB. Other than that it's essentially plug and play now.

I thought of PDA-net before posting the question yesterday since I've had it on my phone for quite some time, but after further inspection I realized it won't work in the manner that I need. That's why I was hoping there was an alternative.

Appreciate all the ideas though!

Kind of a donkey way to do it, but why not loaded up Wyse Pocket Cloud --> RDP to a server at home where you already have an analogue modem attached and do the testing right form your phone, cut out the laptop all together. I'm assuming you are simply testing connectivity and not actually running functions.

I do something similar to connect in to my network at work and manage my servers, I haven't setup my Citrix Environment for Receivers yet and Android doesn't have a standard client, plus the Safeword on top of it, it's a little cumbersome but gives me what I need without having to run home.

The device I need to communicate with 30 miles away isn't a computer. It's an electronic device with a modem.

The device's proprietary software is installed on my laptop. It has various methods of connecting to the device, one of which is dial-up.

Normally I use the modem in the laptop to call up the device and do what I need to do. My objective is to be at the site and call up the device while I'm sitting right by it. The only problem is I don't have a phone line to plug my laptop into, hence the reason why I was asking if maybe there was a phone app that made the phone appear as a modem to the laptop.

I don't think he cares what option can be used. He just doesn't want to drive 30 miles to make sure the thing is working. It would sure help if we knew what the device was so we could see what it is capable of doing and figure out the best option based on the device...

If the device isn't set up correctly with it's on-board modem, then how do you troubleshoot?

See, that's what I'm after...avoiding the driving back and forth. If the modem is working correctly but the device it's connected to isn't configured correctly, then I can make the changes on site and then try again without driving back and forth to a place with a phone jack.

What the device is doesn't matter. A modem, is a modem, is a modem.

I have no idea what your looking for, but I use Magic jack as a modem on my laptop, while tethered to my cell phone. I know it sounds stupid to use your phone to get internet to then use a voip to get a phone, but it then allows me to use internet, and phone at the same time, so I can talk on the phone and look on the internet, and to fax. Like I said, I have no idea what your asking for, and it is way over my head, but didnt know if that would help.

Scott you almost were onto something but limit needs a phone line. Modems and VoIP sucks smile

limit, this client only has one phone line? and that one is hooked up to the device?

they must be using VoIP for all their phones. I suggest you tell them to get another land line.

Is it a fax machine? if so why not set up the settings to send back a confirmation stating the fax was received? Send an electronic fax to it and you should get a confirmation it was received than?

Doesn't a fax mach use a phone line? I thought he said there was no phone line where the secret devise is located.

I'm wondering how the device's modem works on dial without a phone Jack there. confused

there is one phone line. Everything must be VoIP, which you could still use as a phone line I suppose.

Not being able to troubleshoot on site really makes me curious as to what this "mystery device" is. If its a modem used to dial a number, it has some kind of settings you can change onsite. Maybe its a credit card machine, that still should be able to make changes via the machine.

Like I said if we knew the device we could figure out what is possible. We don't know anything about it other than it has a modem. We don't know if it is internal or separate.

As for the 30 minute drive. Most people who work on stuff like this charge per mile? Do you not have a Per Diem & milage limit?

This isn't a client. This is a piece of equipment in the middle of a corn field. smile

As far as the windshield time is concerned, some days it's a blessing to get out of the office. But in all reality I have better things to do than go back and forth on a very boring stretch of highway.

Could another phone line be added? Sure, but why pay the monthly bill for something that is seldom used? I just figured there would be an app out there that would get the job done cheap and dirty. Why I try to be efficient is beyond me. crazy

Use an office phone line and dial yourself into it. Go away from the android app. Problem solved. Also no need to make that drive ever again. If it doesn't work its a modem failure.
