you are looking for an ice fishing headlamp meaning the light wont be going far so anything that runs on AA or AAA batteries and has LEDs in it will last long and give off plenty of light. that being said i own a cyclops and a browning. the cyclops has the battery pack on the back which i love, its not so heavy in the front. both also have LEDs and a white bulb of some kind. if i did it again the cyclops is the one i would get. dont like the browning

Well for those of us outdoors enthusiasts who use headlamps almost every time we are out I think it's a great investment to have a quality one. I bought a Petzl Tikka XP five years ago and couldn't have chose a better one. It has one high output LED bulb and has a beam setting or diffuser with three levels and strobe. My favorite thing about this lamp is the boost mode, which is great for ice fishing jigs. You just hit the boost button and it shoots a high beam for as long as you hold it. When in beam mode the light travels farther than your eyes can make out. Well worth the money if you can keep from losing it over the years. Runs on three AAA batteries. Still work great despite being dropped in the swamp, minnow buckets, left on the ice overnight, and falls onto concrete at work. It does have a little tyvek tape holding it together now though...

I if you just use it for ice fishing the cheapies are ok. Personally I will never go back. I hunt, fish, trap, camp, etc and need a little more out of my headlamp than to see my bobber. IMO, the best and BRIGHTEST is the Princeton Tec - APEX.

WOW - a lot of opinions and good advice.

I bought the Energizer 3LED Headlamp for $14.00

I would have chosen the 6LED or 7LED version by W-mart was sold out.

Every person is Eden Prairie must be walking around with a headlamp.

First usage last night - results: advice was good. Good light for the money.

Bringin this old dog back to life.

I just received a 7 led energizer in the mail and will be using it when I'm out searching Ramsey Cty for a little hockey puck sized piece of plastic worth a substantial amount of money. I will report back how the heck the light performed.

While I wanted one with a hat clip, seems most of the "better" models/stronger lights only like headbands. this one had all the settings I needed so i decided what the heck. Everyone else is ravin about em.

I have the green energizer 6 LED light and I am pretty happy with it. Works great cat fishing and I have been using it ice fishing as well. It has replaced a lantern while fishing alone. I have changed the batteries twice since I bought it last spring. For 15 bones I have no complaints.

    • If you really want to treat your wife (and yourself) with a remote operated trolling motor, the Minn Kota Ulterra is about easy as it gets.  Auto stow and deploy is pretty awesome.  You just have to turn the motor on when you go out and that the last time you have to touch it.   24V 80lb.  60 inch shaft is probably the right length for your boat.  They ain’t cheap - about $3k - but neither one of you would have to leave your seat to use it all day.
    • Wanderer, thanks for your reply. I do intend for it to be 24 volt, with a thrust of 70-80. Spot lock is a must (my wife is looking forward to not being the anchor person any more).  With my old boat we did quite a lot of pulling shad raps and hot n tots, using the trolling motor. Unlikely that we will fish in whitecaps, did plenty of that when I was younger. I also need a wireless remote, not going back to a foot pedal. We do a fair amount of bobber fishing. I don't think I will bother with a depth finder on the trolling motor. I am leaning toward moving my Garmin depth finder from my old boat to the new one, just because I am so used to it and it works well for me. I am 70 years old and kinda set in my ways...
    • Dang, new content and now answers.   First, congrats on the new boat!   My recommendation is to get the most thrust you can in 24V, assuming a boat that size isn’t running 36V.  80 might be tops?  I’m partial to MinnKota.     How do you plan to use the trolling motor is an important question too.     All weather or just nice weather?   Casting a lot or bait dragging?   Bobber or panfish fishing?   Spot lock?  Networked with depth finders?  What brand of depth finders?
    • We have bought a new boat, which we will be picking up this spring. It is an Alumacraft Competitor 165 sport with a 90 horse Yamaha motor. I will be buying and installing a trolling motor,  wondering if I can get some recommendations on what pound thrust I will want for this boat?  Also, I will be selling my old boat, is there a good way to determine the value on an older boat ( mid-80's with a 75 horse 2-stroke  Mariner motor)  I will appreciate any help with these questions.
    • Sketti...  not out of a jar either!
    • Lol yeah I watched that
    • I went ahead and watched some of the MLF coverage.  Wheeler didn’t make the cut but the bigger story was the Poche/Avera fallout.   Kinda funny listening to both sides of the story and putting together the scenario, reading between the lines.
