GPS lake maps on a Garmin Nuvi?

I was digging around a little bit on the garmin HSOforum and it says that the downloadable lake maps are compatible with my Nuvi that I use in my truck. Has anyone ever tried this or seen it in action? Do you lose stuff off of your existing road maps? (i have a lot of hunting spots marked on it) If this worked out it seems like it would work quite well for ice fishing when driving out and for in the boat in good weather. Thanks for any input!

Check with lakemaster/garmin and see if the model you got is compatible but there is lakemaster stuff out there for most of the nuvi's.

I have been looking for a chip myself but it seems like the only way to get them is online. I did see chips in the store a while back but have had no luck lately with finding them. The lakemaster/mapsource software is only available online from what I have seen.

Not familiar with the Nuvi and how much space is down loadable or if you have to have a chip to down load on to. To be on the safe side install Garmin mapsource on your PC and transfer your data to that and you will have a back up and you will be able review edit and plan on map source then you can down load that back to the Nuvi. You can get a free mapsource download from Garmin web site

I have a nuvi 500. I use the micro SD card. I hook it up in the boat, van, truck, and soon the snowmobile. I like it. I think there is a CD also I think you can do more on your computer with the CD than the download. Do a search on here. this has been discussed many times. Look in boating and equipment expert forum.

Yea! Garmin lakemaster is hard to find in the stores I had to get the new one on line. Gander just does not have a clue what the public wants or where they are trending. Man I wish Sportsmans Warehouse was still around they had a great selection of Garmin maps and GPS units.

I could not agree more. I went to all the big name stores plus some of the little guys and its still just lowrance stuff. Too bad it isn't 4 years ago when the H2Oc was boss. Oh well I guess its straight to the source for that stuff...

The Mapsource/Lakemaster software would be the way to go if you want it on just that one unit. Having the ability to backup the waypoints and play with the maps is pretty sweet. I have some of the original lakemaster software and its pretty fun to play with. The new garmin specific stuff with all the new HD maps would be so sweet.

If you get the CD version of lakemaster you can create maps up 2 separate units but you still be stuck to garmin units only. You also can make a new one for those units if it gets lost or damaged. As for viewing it can be moved from PC to another PC. You can also view the lake contours on the PC where with the chip you are not able to.

It cost the same as the Chip.

I also have the Garmin Nuvi 500 I use the micro sd card (2010 lakemaster ). I use it in my truck, icefishing and fishing in summer. One advantage of the 500 is that its water proof I know when using it in the boat (tiller) it gets wet often. You have 3 options for maps 1. micro sd card 2. downloads 3. cds. If you add maps through any of these options you should not lose any old way points.

From what I have seen, Thorn Bro's is about the best place in the Metro area to get Garmin mapping at a good price.

Otherwise straight from the Garmin site is good, and that way your always guaranteed to be the latest versions.

Amazon has highly competitive pricing on Garmin mapping. Verify the version to be sure it's the most recent.

I like this option for my Nuvi, however I wish it had the tracing ability like a handheld so I can easily find my way off the Big lakes when dark. A little truck in the middle of the lake helps a little, but not like a tracing feature.

You can...use the Track Back on a Nuvi, simple reverse the saved track/route.

I got a new Nuvi for Christmas and downloaded the lakemaster software straight from the Garmin site. It took a while (big) but it seems to work great. Now if I could only find the time to try it out!

Note: When I registered my Nuvi on their site they sent me an email. In it there was a 10% off code to use on accessories and certain mapping software. This code worked when I purchased and downloaded the lakemaster software. A nice suprise.

Does that work for roads that you traveled on only? When you are on the lake, it just show's your car in the 'water'. I'm not familiar with Track back.

If you start a new track, clear the old when you start..then start a rout...when you wish to reverse it..do the "Go To"..and select from there.

It then should prompt you to select Track Back or Fallow Rout...or it will just B-Line to the start weigh point if you tell it to do that too.

I think..I may need to go look at my Nuvi to be sure, but I am fairly certain that is how it went.

With a LakeMaster or the Garmin chip/data in use, the Marine Mode offers a few new features that do not pop up when in road use mode. They often also work in Pedestin Mode, just like they do in Marine Mode too.

I think there is a good video clip on it on the Garmin site, to show the way to fallow tracks both ways?

Not sure if that helped any or not? But watch the prompts closely, it helps you along.

I get 6' to 12' accuracy most days, even 1 meter at times. Satellite coverage is the key there no matter what brand you run, it can vary widely in various terrain. Overall I rate it as very good.

You can zoom in close enough to see your position and relate to the structure around you. Depending on what user mode your in, and if your running a Garmin card or whatever, 3-D view is also doable.

Bye the way guys, I spoke to Garmin about adding Ice Shacks to the fleet of user vehicles in the Garmin Garage. So we can get 3-D ice shack icons as vehicles...even behind ATV's and Sleds. That will be Kewl once it's ready.

I'm eager to get my Black/Gold/Grey Garmin Garmin 3-D shack vehicle....as in a Frabill. smile

Sleds and ATV's are already there in the garage is you want them, just install the in your Nuvi.

There is user software that you can use to make your own Vehicle, if your savvy enough to tinker with it. You can read up on it in the Garmin user forums if you wish.

Hunterpete go to the garmin HSOforum to get the full list of lakes that have contours. The ones you see on the lakemaster sight only show what Lalemaster has plotted out(HD lakes there called. Garmin has other resources the usu to expand their list of lakes. Many dont know this, chances are its going to have your lake.

    • Sounds pretty sweet, alright. I will check them out, thanks.
    • If you really want to treat your wife (and yourself) with a remote operated trolling motor, the Minn Kota Ulterra is about easy as it gets.  Auto stow and deploy is pretty awesome.  You just have to turn the motor on when you go out and that the last time you have to touch it.   24V 80lb.  60 inch shaft is probably the right length for your boat.  They ain’t cheap - about $3k - but neither one of you would have to leave your seat to use it all day.
    • Wanderer, thanks for your reply. I do intend for it to be 24 volt, with a thrust of 70-80. Spot lock is a must (my wife is looking forward to not being the anchor person any more).  With my old boat we did quite a lot of pulling shad raps and hot n tots, using the trolling motor. Unlikely that we will fish in whitecaps, did plenty of that when I was younger. I also need a wireless remote, not going back to a foot pedal. We do a fair amount of bobber fishing. I don't think I will bother with a depth finder on the trolling motor. I am leaning toward moving my Garmin depth finder from my old boat to the new one, just because I am so used to it and it works well for me. I am 70 years old and kinda set in my ways...
    • Dang, new content and now answers.   First, congrats on the new boat!   My recommendation is to get the most thrust you can in 24V, assuming a boat that size isn’t running 36V.  80 might be tops?  I’m partial to MinnKota.     How do you plan to use the trolling motor is an important question too.     All weather or just nice weather?   Casting a lot or bait dragging?   Bobber or panfish fishing?   Spot lock?  Networked with depth finders?  What brand of depth finders?
    • We have bought a new boat, which we will be picking up this spring. It is an Alumacraft Competitor 165 sport with a 90 horse Yamaha motor. I will be buying and installing a trolling motor,  wondering if I can get some recommendations on what pound thrust I will want for this boat?  Also, I will be selling my old boat, is there a good way to determine the value on an older boat ( mid-80's with a 75 horse 2-stroke  Mariner motor)  I will appreciate any help with these questions.
    • Sketti...  not out of a jar either!
    • Lol yeah I watched that
