Jiffy Stealth STX

Recommended Posts

i just bought one yesterday! 8" 2hp stealth STX. ran it through the break-in period and it cuts great. the auger pulls so hard on the ice it wants to die. i hope the moter comes out of it. i own a 20 year old jiffy that drills better than my brand new one.

Im running fresh 91 octane gas and fresh oil. like i said i hope as i run the auger more, the moter comes out of the staggering. my 20 year old jiffy can be fired up and drilling instantly with no hesitation, even if i lay on it.

Not sure what kind of oil to use in it either. Any recommendations?

Amsoil Saber 100:1 oil. The stuff is great, and can be run in any small two stroke. I usually run mine at 90:1 just to cover any oil I don't get out of the pillow pack.

Congrats on the auger!

Congrats on the auger!

I have been using the 100:1 in mt STX's also and liking it, less smoke and easy -20 below starts.

i have a jiffy stealth STX 3hp 10" mine used to run a little rough as well

when it was new, ran better at 1/2 choke, after running it like that i figured id adjust the carbs a little, a little tuning and it kicks but now, also heard that when most are built they test run them in warmer conditions so come winter they dont run as smoothly,

Just got it and put it together (push the pin and push up collar). Really like it. Haven't started it up yet. It does say 40:1, so I'm torn. Not that I don't trust you guys, but I usually follow the manufacturer's specs.

I know it says that the auger is coated so there is no ice build-up, but does anyone spray nonstick cooking spray on it to help reduce build-up?

40:1 is right on if you're using standard 2 stroke oil. Amsoil SABER 100:1 is a synthetic oil specifically formulated to run at 100:1, and work with ALL small 2 stroke engines, regardless of if it's designed to run 30, 40, 50 or whatever :1. That includes small snowblowers, chainsaws, weed whips, etc.

I started using it in my chainsaw, ice auger, blower and weed whip a few years ago, and it's been great! I won't switch back to conventional oil for my small 2 strokes, period.

You may want to break it in with Jiffy oil. Iffin you have an engine problem it would most likely turn up right away after first uses and the Amsoil may void your warranty?

I have a 3 year old tec motor 2hp stx and will eventually try Amsoil, maybe anyways, but I can't find any round Roseau/Warroad. I run Jiffy's oil at 40:1, stuff has stabilizer in it and this year it fired up 3 pulls with last years fuel still in it, ran just like fresh petrol was in it. Kinda nice not having to do any summerization though that goes against my rules.

I know this is concerning a Jiffy but they all run a Tec. motor. I picked up an older SM Corba Pro and it called for 24:1, SM oil from the store is 40:1, I called SM and they told me that they changed over to 40:1 in all motors to eliminate the unburned oil that blows through the exhaust.

She said it doesn't matter what the current motor calls for, 40:1 is the mix I should use. I mentioned Amsoil and she told me they don't "suggest" running it leaner than 50:1.

I don't have a warranty to be concerned with so I'm not too worried about that but Fiskyknut has a good point, maybe get through one season before switching to Amsoil, just in case you have an issue that requires a warranty repair.

Great auger, by the way. My brother has been running one for a few years. Never had a problem with it.

I just looked at the Amsoil 100:1 online and it says to run 2.6 oz. per gallon of gas for a 50:1 ratio.

So what do you do....this stuff is confusing me. One guy says 1.5 oz/gal., their HSOforum says 2.6 oz/gal. ?????????

Take a look at all the comments above and you can see that the exact oil/gas mixture is really not very critical. Modern oils whether synthetic or mineral based are all pretty good and the engine will survive on mixtures much leaner than what the manufacturer’s recommend. The synthetic oils provide the best film strength and that is what enables Amsoil and the other synthetics to run at 100:1 in a properly broken in engine. That said, they also lubricate so well that the “break in” on internal parts can be questioned and it is often recommended to use conventional mineral based oils when you first run the engine. It’s your choice there. For some interesting reading on the subject do a search on the two stroke motorcycle forums and see what they have found on the subject of oil types and mix ratios.

As far as figuring out mix ratios, close is good enough. A gallon of gas is 128 fluid ounces so 100:1 would take 1.28 fluid ounces of oil, 50:1 would take 2.56 oz., 40:1 would be 3.2 oz, etc. The Amsoil Saber pouch is 1.5 oz., so in one gallon of gas the mix would be 85:1 which would work very well.

Personally I never mix more that ½ gallon at a time just to keep the mix from getting old, and I use 1 oz in the ½ gallon can for a 64:1 mixture (I am using oil that comes in a can). I run all of my small two stroke engines on this mix. That keeps it to one gas can/one mix for all to make it simple. With a good synthetic you could run at ratios up to the 100:1 if you feel comfortable running that lean on oil.

I had issues with my jiffy right out of the box, couldnt get it adjusted, they had me send it in no charge, i had it back 2 days later free of charge and the thing has screamed ever since. I use Amsoil Sabre at 100:1. I have a 3hp 9" and one thing ive noticed is that it is a cold-blooded s.o.b. I need to let it warm up for a bit, but once it is i can drill like a madman.

Amsoil is cleaner burning than conventional oil, doesnt smoke as much, and doesnt smell as bad.

Amsoil also eliminates the need to have 2 or 3 different ratios of mixed fuel for different tools like said above.
