Crappie Jig

I posted this on another forum with no response... It was in reply to "What is your best Crappie jig?"

I am hoping we can do better here.

"I use a lure that I do not know the name of... If anyone does PLEASE let me know.

All I know is "some guy in WI. makes them" this is all I have ever heard from the 2 places I have ever seen them available.

They could not tell me any other information... They are always just labeled pan\crappie.

Its a cone shaped "crappie size" lure with a horizontal display. The hook has a real hook to it (if that makes sense). The back of the cone and the eye both have glow paint. (assorted colors) The cone body looks like tiger striped aluminum foil. (they have it in a gold foil as well)

When a crappie school comes in this lure will get them 5-1 easily over any other lure we have down, same depth, jig, or dead stick, it does not matter.

I am not sure if its the hook set or the style, color... but they WORK.

Whenever I come across them I will buy as many as they have... which usually is under a handful.

Here is my attempt at a drawing of it"

Anyone know the name?

Where have you seen them available? Maybe they could help!!

Nope... both places tight lipped. I will have to get some pictures of them instead of my sweet drawing.

I got the most recent ones from some bait\tackle shop at the St. Paul ice fishing show.... don't remember the name and he only took cash so I have no receipt. Older guy set up on a corner booth in about the middle of the whole place, lots of jigs he was in the booth with his wife ... I bought them ALL (which was only about a dozen).

The other place I have seen them is the bait shop near hwy 96 before you get to Bald Eagle lake. I think its called little bear or something like that. He RARELY gets them in. He and the guy at the show both told me "they are made by some guy in WI." I ask every time for the name, where they are made etc. and thats all I can get out of them.

At the show I had to almost come to blows with my buddy who has seen these things in action, he wanted to buy the guy out before me. It ended up I let him buy a few.

If you come across any, they will out fish any other lure you can throw at crappie. I think it has to be the unique hook set and the crappies bite. Its hard to tell from my awesome drawing... I take some pics tonight.

This one here circled is Red is THE bread and butter... well over a 100+ fish in the last 2 years. You can see the foil is starting to go and the glow aint so glowey anymore.

None of the other lures made by the same place have that exact height on the string tie and hook with that angle in silver foil and red glow. I have some blue glow that are like it, and the same hook and tie in gold foil but they don't do as well.

Those were probably made by a guy in Wisc named Rich K. He called em "Loner" jigs. There was also a guy in Michigan makeing them with the eye on the back end and the stripes up front.

I paint alot of my own, they are a great jig. Find someone with a mold and play around with diff hooks to see what you like. I like a longer shank for fishing plastics and a shorter one for tipping with a few eurolarva. Bending the hooks out a tad really helps with hook-ups.

I mostly use the 1/32 and 1/64. I bought a mold and gave it to a friend who keeps me supplied with em...

No jig is that big of a cure-all but confidence in a jig is huge... cool

p.s. - a few of my buddies used to get a bunch of jigs directly from the guy. They dont know what happened but hes MIA for a few years now...

olbaidhh, It is a store on the big auction site. If you punch "shad dart jigs" into the search engine they will come up there. There are 80 some different hits for it so you just have to look for what you want. I ordered 12 of the silver and gold ones in a size 10 for ten bucks. I also looked at Grizzly's Tackle and they also have them, however I was not impressed with any of their prices. You can wald into GM and buy diamond or devil jigs for cheaper than they have on that site.

    • If you really want to treat your wife (and yourself) with a remote operated trolling motor, the Minn Kota Ulterra is about easy as it gets.  Auto stow and deploy is pretty awesome.  You just have to turn the motor on when you go out and that the last time you have to touch it.   24V 80lb.  60 inch shaft is probably the right length for your boat.  They ain’t cheap - about $3k - but neither one of you would have to leave your seat to use it all day.
    • Wanderer, thanks for your reply. I do intend for it to be 24 volt, with a thrust of 70-80. Spot lock is a must (my wife is looking forward to not being the anchor person any more).  With my old boat we did quite a lot of pulling shad raps and hot n tots, using the trolling motor. Unlikely that we will fish in whitecaps, did plenty of that when I was younger. I also need a wireless remote, not going back to a foot pedal. We do a fair amount of bobber fishing. I don't think I will bother with a depth finder on the trolling motor. I am leaning toward moving my Garmin depth finder from my old boat to the new one, just because I am so used to it and it works well for me. I am 70 years old and kinda set in my ways...
    • Dang, new content and now answers.   First, congrats on the new boat!   My recommendation is to get the most thrust you can in 24V, assuming a boat that size isn’t running 36V.  80 might be tops?  I’m partial to MinnKota.     How do you plan to use the trolling motor is an important question too.     All weather or just nice weather?   Casting a lot or bait dragging?   Bobber or panfish fishing?   Spot lock?  Networked with depth finders?  What brand of depth finders?
    • We have bought a new boat, which we will be picking up this spring. It is an Alumacraft Competitor 165 sport with a 90 horse Yamaha motor. I will be buying and installing a trolling motor,  wondering if I can get some recommendations on what pound thrust I will want for this boat?  Also, I will be selling my old boat, is there a good way to determine the value on an older boat ( mid-80's with a 75 horse 2-stroke  Mariner motor)  I will appreciate any help with these questions.
    • Sketti...  not out of a jar either!
    • Lol yeah I watched that
    • I went ahead and watched some of the MLF coverage.  Wheeler didn’t make the cut but the bigger story was the Poche/Avera fallout.   Kinda funny listening to both sides of the story and putting together the scenario, reading between the lines.
