Ice Fishing During Storms/Blizzard

I have has some awesome fishing during a snow storm. The only thing that might be different with this storm is that it will start late tonight and when I great fishing I was fishing at the start of the storm and that was when the walleyes were just snapping. I ended up with about a 2 hour window were I had constant action. This was also a morning bite.

Sold...of course you could have said the fishing was terrible and I'd still be itching to get back on the ice.

I guess I figured the bite would be hot as the front moves in, but I was worried than when it arrives the fishing might slow. Who knows though...I guess a guy never really does until his line is wet.

The biggest problem I see is dragging my porty through 15" of snow. Might keel over and die. Good thing I gave up the smokes last year or I'd really be huffin n' puffin.

Any other experiences in winter storms?

So what's a guys chances at catching pannies while the temps are plummeting and the snow is dumping? (Thinking about tomorrow specifically, but could just as well be speaking generally too)

What are your thoughts?

So I was trying to see talk to you about our plan for tomorrow before I left the office and I did not bother you becasue your door was closed. I guess I now know what you do behind your closed door at work and how to get a hold of you if I have to.

I am still in, what time? I may get a head start and take a look at the situation before you can leave. Can you send me some GPS cords of the general area you were thinking about on my phone?

Ha! Actually was in a slough of conference calls around lunchtime today.

If we are walking out, I think our best bet is to park in that lot and head out from there.

Want to stop at Menards and pick up a dishwasher for me on your way out? Thanks.

unfortunately for you my truck will be full of my gear. I am looking forward to some blizzard fishing. I have had some luck in storms. Not looking forward to the white knuckle drive out there though. I was thinking of walking unless I see some trucks out there already. If you think of it when you get home I would still like the cords. If I walk out my self and then move when you show up I do not want to move that far.

I don't really have any cords. I was just gonna walk out from that parking lot until I found 10 feet of water and start fishing.

What time are you thinking about heading out there?

My best day ever ice fishing for pike was during a blizard. Had to bring the tip ups closer to the vehicle so I could see the flag. It was like clockwork from 8am-11am every 30 minutes a flag. Got a couple eaters the rest were 34-37 inches.

I hope the crappies bite well during these conditions, as we are heading out here shortly to the backwoods and waters of Itasca County, north of Nashwauk. Actually, I've had some real good catches during a snowfall but it looks like it may miss us today. That's even better!

I've had consistently good fishing going into storms including yesterday afternoon and into early evening. Sunnies and crappies were crazy in about 15 to 16 feet. Small lake and I was the only one on it. Ice was about 6 inches.

Are you guys serious about good fishing during a storm? Before I have had good luck but during never.

The answer to your question is "yes". We were crazy enough to go out. I had an hour drive. It was... interesting, a little scary, but exciting. That was until I got to the location and had to lug my stuff out to the fishing hole. I almost died. Cozy in the Fish Trap but the nagging thought of having to pack up and drag all my gear back made it hard to really relax. Well I made I back to my truck after having two heartattacks and a mild stroke from the effort (I gotta quit the Camel's). The drive back was better. MNDOT gets a big thumbs up from me. The roads were still hairy, but could not have been any better due to the circumstances. Well I am at home, real sore and letting you know that I feek like the most hardcore fisherman in Minnesota today. Oh yeah by the way, caught two crappies for the effort. Be careful out there everyone, I could not have made it without the four wheel drive and a lot of patience.

Is the snow blowing off? I live in a field. where the wind is really ripping it is down to bare grass. It even ripped the frozen crunchy old snow off. I hope the lakes are the same for the most part. if it blows this snow off and the temps are as cold as they say we will make a tone of ice the next two days. I'm praying.

I went out yesterday as well, the pull out was not to bad but as JBohmer already said, the pull back in was possibly the most insane thing i'v ever done! How do you cross a drift that is waist deep while pulling your porty? My legs have never been this sore, but at least the perch were cooperating, we iced 6 that were eater size and a ton more little dinkers. All in all it was a blast, to go up against mother nature in those conditions and win. Although I dont think there will be any pulling by hand for a while, the snow is super deep. The ice was sagging pretty good we were sitting in four inches of standing water all day, I actually shoveled snow into the house to try to get a little better floor in there. FUN, FUN, FUN.

dont think the snow was blowing off much. What I saw on the lake I was on the lake seemed to be keeping its base layer and 2ft drifts every few feet or so around 7:00 last night. Just more snow adding weight. Sagging was an issue for me too. I easily has two inches of water on the floor of my flip up. I had just enough rubber on my boots to keep my feet dry.
