DOT# for all vehicles hauling trailers?

My sister tells me yesterday that if you pull any trailer now that you need to hav a DOT# certification. That is what she read in a cart racing magazine about pulling trailers and that this law is now in effect!
Now I haven't heard anything of sorts, have you?

A co-worker told me her husband got a ticket last week for not having the proper endorsement on his drivers license. $80.00 ticket.

He was pulling his cabin crusier which was on a 30 ft trailer.

There could be something about the length/size of the trailer.

They were probably over the width regulation of 8'6". Check this link for minnesota requirements..

Just talked to the DOT people regarding DOT #'s for all recreational trailering and they thought I was crazy!
There is no such law for recreational use, only commercial trailering!
Thats what they told me! So there!!

You only need a dot # when your truck is licensed commercial.This is done by farmers and business so if you purchased a used truck and it is licensed commercial you will need the number!Or change the license!

I just took my recertification to be a MN DOT inspector and this was brought up. INTRA STATE (vehicles Not crossing state lines) anything over 26,000 combined (truck&trailer) GVW must be inspected and display a valid inspection decal. INTER STATE (vehicles crossing state lines) witch now fall under Federal guide lines for Commercial use. Commercial (crossing state lines for a profit) All vehicles with a GVWR or a combination of vehicles with a combined GVWR of more than 10,001#or more, involved in INTRA STATE commerce must show proof that the vehicle and trailer have passed the annual inspection. To sum it up, Joe lives in MN and is going to fish a tourny in IA. He has a big 4x4 truck and a 19 foot boat with everything packed in it, he is probably over 10,001# and is he croosing state lines for a profit YES he is, he could win money at the tourny. If he is just going for recreation he does not need one. (just don't tell them you are going to a tournament)
Now if Joe is taking his horse to IA to sell. He has a big 4x4 truck and a big horse trailer (he is over 10,001#) is he crossing state lines for a profit YES he is and would need both the truck & trailer inspected. If he was going horse back riding in IA he would not need a decal. Anything over 10,001# crossing state lines for a profit is a Commercial vehicle. I live in MN and fish tourny's in IA,SD,ND,MN and have not had a problem yet, I just dont tell them I am going to a tournament, just going fishing. Now if you are the guy that wins a RCL and have one of those big checks to hold up, you mite want to hide it!

Deerslayer, that actually made sense to me. Either you are a really concise writer or I'm getting used to all the rules we have to follow. If anyone thinks us outdoorsman are really just stupid hicks they should watch us actually understand all the laws we need to follow! For a test, within 8 minutes (for regional differences in Minnesota)what time is sundown Nov 8 of any year (deer hunters have an advantage, don't cheat now!)
