St. Paul Ice Fishing Show

Recommended Posts

I heard it from a friend that St. Paul was hosting an Ice fishing show next weekend? I was wondering if anybody has ever gone and if it is worth my time and money? Usually if it has to do with fishing or hunting I am in, but I dont want to go south to waste my time on something stupid when I know I could go north to actually fish and have fun!!

I think its great. My buddies and i go every year and make a day of it. Its pretty cool to see the new things people come up with. You can get some pretty good deals out there too.

One bad thing is, drooling over the awesome wheelhouses and trying to figure out how to sneak one under the wife's radar!

I travel all the way from Illinois to go. It is worth it. There are always deals on electronics(all brands). Seeing faces I might not see any other time of the year is cool too. Last year the Kahtoola micro spikes were the find of the year for me. Only a week away, can't wait.

It’s a great event. I have spent the last few years at the St. Paul ice show working the Marcum booth and really enjoyed it. Tons of products, information and just a lot of great ideas. Sadly this year I won't be making it as I am scheduled to be at Cabelas in East Grand Forks for their Ice Classic. I would make the trip to the ice show or ice classics just to get in on the deals. Some of the best prices you will see all year.

Cyberfish come find me at the Otter booth or maybe at the Nils booth and I will fill ya in on any deals to be had at the show on a Nils. There is always something like a free blade or something. If your looking for a 8" get it the 1st day because they are selling like crazy already and I have a feeling they will be hard to find after the 1st day like they were 2 years ago. All other sizes should be fine but the 8"ers. I know the 8" hand augers went like mad.

Hi Northlander, I will do that, thanks, but how will I know who is you? shocked

I was thinking of getting the 6", since my main ice fishing activity is panfish tournaments. my partner has one and it is so light and fast.

why are the 8 inchers so popular? arethey as light and fast as the 6? I might consider an 8 if so

    • Truly sorry to hear that duffman! I know that feeling.  Keep the good memories
    • Chamois passed away this weekend a couple days short of her 13th bday. What a great dog to hang out with here at home and on distant adventures. Gonna miss ya big time my little big girl.
    • Sounds pretty sweet, alright. I will check them out, thanks.
    • If you really want to treat your wife (and yourself) with a remote operated trolling motor, the Minn Kota Ulterra is about easy as it gets.  Auto stow and deploy is pretty awesome.  You just have to turn the motor on when you go out and that the last time you have to touch it.   24V 80lb.  60 inch shaft is probably the right length for your boat.  They ain’t cheap - about $3k - but neither one of you would have to leave your seat to use it all day.
    • Wanderer, thanks for your reply. I do intend for it to be 24 volt, with a thrust of 70-80. Spot lock is a must (my wife is looking forward to not being the anchor person any more).  With my old boat we did quite a lot of pulling shad raps and hot n tots, using the trolling motor. Unlikely that we will fish in whitecaps, did plenty of that when I was younger. I also need a wireless remote, not going back to a foot pedal. We do a fair amount of bobber fishing. I don't think I will bother with a depth finder on the trolling motor. I am leaning toward moving my Garmin depth finder from my old boat to the new one, just because I am so used to it and it works well for me. I am 70 years old and kinda set in my ways...
    • Dang, new content and now answers.   First, congrats on the new boat!   My recommendation is to get the most thrust you can in 24V, assuming a boat that size isn’t running 36V.  80 might be tops?  I’m partial to MinnKota.     How do you plan to use the trolling motor is an important question too.     All weather or just nice weather?   Casting a lot or bait dragging?   Bobber or panfish fishing?   Spot lock?  Networked with depth finders?  What brand of depth finders?
    • We have bought a new boat, which we will be picking up this spring. It is an Alumacraft Competitor 165 sport with a 90 horse Yamaha motor. I will be buying and installing a trolling motor,  wondering if I can get some recommendations on what pound thrust I will want for this boat?  Also, I will be selling my old boat, is there a good way to determine the value on an older boat ( mid-80's with a 75 horse 2-stroke  Mariner motor)  I will appreciate any help with these questions.
