A "Slam" of my own.

Recommended Posts

I am sure we have all heard of the "slams". The Turkey GrandSlam, the sheep GrandSlam, the SuperSlam, etc. This year, after 19 seasons of MN whitetails, I completed a Slam of my own. Now granted, most slams require that the criter in question be of record or trophy quality, but every deer I shoot is a trophy, may not be to anyone else, but it is to me.

So here we go with my explination....

I started deer hunting with my father in November of 1991. If I remeber right something big happened that year. wink

In '92 I shot my first deer, a doe at 6yards. Taken with a Mossberg .410 shotgun.

That same year I also shot a doe at 75 yards with my fathers Mossberg .308 rifle.

After several years of hunting with the rifle and realizing that if I could see a deer I could shoot it, I began bowhunting.

In '97 I shot a doe with a wheeled compound bow at 13 yards. Hoyt Spectra 5000 (good enough for Rambo right wink )

Killed my first one with a vehical in '97 as well. mad Also a doe at 60mph with a 94 GMC Jimmy.

In '98 I sold the Hoyt an bought a PSE that had cam's. Harpooned a broken horn buck at 7 yards that season.

The fall of '02 I got my first with a Recurve bow, a Pearson Spoiler that I grabbed at a garage sale for $25. A big matriarcal doe at 4 yards.

In '03 I was privlaged enought to take a fork on the ground with a borrowed Fox Longbow at 3, yes 3 yards.

A change in situation put a hault to my bowhunting opprotunities after '05.

In '06 I realized that most of my rifle hunting stands were set up in "bowhunting" type situations. And since I did not have the chance to bowhunt anymore I would start trying with a pistol.

I finaly had things work out in Nov. of '08 taking a big old grey-face doe with a .357mag at 6yards. The pic is floating around on the site enough that I dont need to post it again.

That year while we were sitting on the back of the tailgate recapping the days events my dad say's to me "now all you need to do get get one with the Muzzleloader and you will be done." He was right, other than a crossbow, which I despise as a weapon, all I needed was a Muzzy deer.

Fast forward to opening day 2010 firearms. I commited to trying to get one with the Muzzleloader. At 8:30am I spotted a big bodied deer stepping out of my best shooting lane. For the next 5min he took his moring frustrations out on the bushes. He was working a trail that follows the edge of the swamp going trough all the bedding cover on the edge. 8:37am he steps into and pause's a moment to long in a spot clear enough to get a shot into. BOOOM!!! he disapears into a cloud of white smoke...

He may not be the biggest deer in the woods, but my family ate tag soup last season, so I was more than happy to take him, 2.5year old basket 8. The way I figured it, if I was sitting in a stand on the first weekend of Dec with a Muzzleloader I would have taken the shot, so I was happy as all get out to take him. 45yard with a TC Omega with .250gr Hornaday FTX in Harvester easyslide Sabot, and 130gr 777.

Anyone else "done it all"?

I will say the hardest one was the Hangun deer. Getting a deer in that close durring the firearms season was a lot harder than I expected it to be.

I have two weapons down, compound bow and rifle. I already have 3 deer this season, well 3 in the last week, (all .308) I tried with my bow earlier this year but didn't make it out as much as I would have liked. Now I can still shoot a few more deer, and I may just try to get out with my muzzleloader and get one but thats if I have the ambition. there is always next year. Ones I would love to try are recurve and pistol, but money is short in supply for this college student. I know for sure that I will get out with those weapons in the future.

Okay that is pretty awsome indeed, and is kinda a goal of mine as well.... For the past couple years I have been thinking more and more about getting a longbow, as well as trying a pistol for them. I have bow, rifle, shotgun and muzzloader kills. All that is left are the hard ones...

Congrats. I achieved a "slam" of my own a couple of years ago. I took deer with a bow (fred bear element) a pistol (Ruger security 6) Rifle (Winchester model 70 300wsm) and a muzzleloader (CVA kodiak pro magnum 45 caliber) I thought that was a rare accomplishment!
