what is wrong with me?

I used to hate winter, and fall almost just as much since it meant the inevitable was that much closer. There was nothing enjoyable about it, shoveling wet slush off the driveway, tracking snow/salt into the house and garage, warming up the truck in the driveway takes forever. Always loved it when i'd hit the wipers quick to take off the road spray that just hit the window, only to find out they've been torn because they froze in.

These days I'm actually looking forward to it. I can't wait to take that first step onto the hardwaters and watch that vexilar light up like a christmas tree! I think I should be saddened when I say I look forward to it more than getting the boat out now. I am blaming FMN for putting me into this mood so early, as it appears they bumped ice fishing above open water sooner than most years. Heck - they didn't even give us a chance to beg for it this time around!

Count me a convert, too. I used to hate winter, too. Now I love fall because winter's just around the corner! Instead of complaining about a season, I've now found a hobby that requires winter to be the way it is. Bring on the ice!

I still dislike winter, but this makes it survivable!

(Sorry.... Golf, Frisbee golf, ultimate frisbee, and open water fishing are 5 whereas ice fishing and broomball are 2)

laugh Then again, I grew up in the south so I'm not supposed to like winter at all. Heh.

I moved to Ely from Maui. Loving the ice fishing! It was the only way to enjoy the cold weather, and now I actaully look forward to winter. Since I can't afford a nice sled though i just look forward to snowless winter- too much snow is too much trouble smile so all in all i still prefer a "green" x-mas smile

I don't know, but it's the same thing that's wrong with me....no more friggin' 95 degree days with 95% humidity to gag me; no poundin' rainstorms to flood my basement; no mowin' or trimming lawn; no picking up tree limbs all over my yard after the windstorm...blah...blah...Just sit back...everything's done, cleaned, lubed, put away, buttoned up,ready for winter.

Put that beef roast and 'tatos in the crock pot, sit back, crack another brew, and BRING 'ER ON!!!!!!! Don't matter if it's 25 or -5! It's all the same!!! Lock in that 4 x 4 and head out!

Good friends, good fishin', nature at it's most perfect...beautiful sunrises, breathtaking sunsets, pristine, quiet snowfalls, the trip home to a warm house and fire after a great day on the ice... what could be better? That's my take. Oops, think I ranted a little there... crazy

Sounds about right, but I'll add to that no more bugs or allergies either. And you don't even need to pack a cooler for thos cold ones.

I am close to falling off the deep end soon. I enjoy ice fishing with a passion, I even sold my boat and all summer equipment a few years ago.

I spend my falls chasing whitetails with my bow, but normally when the water freezes, I hang up the bow and stands and load up the wheeler and house.....weeeeee.

Nothing better than turning on the heater, Vexilar and cracking a cold one.

Ice fishing is one of, if not my favorite activity, thanks largely to my parents who took me to Mille Lacs every weekend growing up. I was too fast and usually beat them to the rattle reel. Come night time, you couldn't wake me up with a blaring boom box, but the slightest *ting ting ting and I was already up, out of the top bunk and pulling in hand over hand.

I have three young children now and can't wait to share the sport with them too. Just need to save up for a wheelhouse large enough for a family of 5...

    • Aw, man, sorry to hear that.  Shed some tears and remember her well.  They all take a piece of our hearts with them; some more than others.
    • yes sorry for your loss..  our dogs are always special...
    • Truly sorry to hear that duffman! I know that feeling.  Keep the good memories
    • Chamois passed away this weekend a couple days short of her 13th bday. What a great dog to hang out with here at home and on distant adventures. Gonna miss ya big time my little big girl.
    • Sounds pretty sweet, alright. I will check them out, thanks.
    • If you really want to treat your wife (and yourself) with a remote operated trolling motor, the Minn Kota Ulterra is about easy as it gets.  Auto stow and deploy is pretty awesome.  You just have to turn the motor on when you go out and that the last time you have to touch it.   24V 80lb.  60 inch shaft is probably the right length for your boat.  They ain’t cheap - about $3k - but neither one of you would have to leave your seat to use it all day.
    • Wanderer, thanks for your reply. I do intend for it to be 24 volt, with a thrust of 70-80. Spot lock is a must (my wife is looking forward to not being the anchor person any more).  With my old boat we did quite a lot of pulling shad raps and hot n tots, using the trolling motor. Unlikely that we will fish in whitecaps, did plenty of that when I was younger. I also need a wireless remote, not going back to a foot pedal. We do a fair amount of bobber fishing. I don't think I will bother with a depth finder on the trolling motor. I am leaning toward moving my Garmin depth finder from my old boat to the new one, just because I am so used to it and it works well for me. I am 70 years old and kinda set in my ways...
    • Dang, new content and now answers.   First, congrats on the new boat!   My recommendation is to get the most thrust you can in 24V, assuming a boat that size isn’t running 36V.  80 might be tops?  I’m partial to MinnKota.     How do you plan to use the trolling motor is an important question too.     All weather or just nice weather?   Casting a lot or bait dragging?   Bobber or panfish fishing?   Spot lock?  Networked with depth finders?  What brand of depth finders?
