SK in the teens or lower tonight and tomorrow night. MB in the 20s tonight, colder tomorrow night.

Birds will be on the move with prevailing NW winds and clear skies the next couple nights. Not the last birds, but they will be comming through.

I agree as soon as the right winds show up the birds will be on the move.

No. Dak. saw some snow and nasty conditions that hunkered the birds down from the report I got near Rock Lake.

It's only going to get better from what I can tell.

I need the riv to drop about a foot in the next 2 weeks to really get it going.

Ya. This system was a little too strong to push them south. I think the majority just hunkered down, and rode it out.

The colder temps up north should get em' thinking. Gentle north/northwest winds will start moving groups down at night. Lot of puddles froze over this a.m. in our area, but I doubt it'll stay that way. At least I hope it doesn't!

With all the water we've got standing now in the NW corner, and western part of the state hopefully we'll have birds come down and linger for a while this fall!!!

That is what I figured too. This weather might start some new movement I was hoping that some might come in while I am working so Friday morning would be good. But with south winds Friday I might wait until Saturday. With this cold weather my internal struggle has begun when trying to decide between ducks or bucks.

Exactly, the weather this fall has been tuff and the birds are going to be coming a little late for me once rifle started! frown

You know, it was a big storm, but it came out of the south. Ducks move when these kind of storms come from the north/northwest. But many have already passed due to length of daylight each day - 'tis the season where certain ducks move based on the calendar, not on the conditions.

Should be enough Mallards and assorted divers to keep us busy though...here's to hot coffee and a wet lab in your boat at sunrise!

Went out last night in central mn and saw 75-100 ducks altogether. Shot some teal (greenwing) also had a flock of 40-50 come in I think were teal but didnt get a good look as I was out walking around on the wrong side of the treeline I was hiding in, they might have been woodies since I heard one shortly after. Passed on a group of 3 mallards that came in really nice, but I didnt shoot because the one I picked out that I thought was a drake turned out to not be a drake, also second guessed myself because I thought they'd come around again and I could shoot them over land (opposed to getting blown accross the open water) but it didnt happen like that. Seen one large flock way up there bookin with the wind. Also saw a nice group of divers out on a private lake I was deer hunting next to yesterday. Lots of flooded fields and 50% of them have ducks in them scouted from my deer hunting spot to my place. Gonna hit it hard this weekend while they are around.

No argument Heartman. Most species are pretty predictable by the calendar dates. This weather pattern came from the West / NW in our neck of the woods. We've had wind blowing anywhere from 15-50 miles per hour out of the west / NW for the last three days. Maybe it was different over in your area?

With the very mild temps we've had I don't think we've seen much real movement yet. Oct. was too nice here. Reports out of the Dakotas indicate most local birds have blown out, and a few stragglers have come down from Canada. The cold temps up north should now begin to push birds south.

At least in my observations over the last 30 years, birds don't move too much in extremely high winds - unless they have too. Like when all their home water is frozen solid, but I don't think that's happened yet.

The northern stretches of Canada, where many of the birds are still holding, wasn't even affected by this storm. But again, the cold temps starting up there now will definately get them thinking!

I'm fairly certain we should start seeing new birds in the next week or so. I'll be up on Lake of the Woods this weekend, and will report back when I return.

Hot coffee weather is definately here! Ever notice how much better hot coffee tastes when you're out in the field, or the boat? wink

Iv been hunting NW MN and Iv observed some migration. New mallards pushed through on the 12th and stayed around for awhile. Found a lake that had over a thousand birds on it and hunting a slough about a mile away and worked traffic. Shot ten mallards in a week geting a few each trip. Iv been pleasantly suprised on the birds iv seen with this warm weather.

Didnt see anything of significance along the Mn river yesterday, seems ea. yr we wait for the "pie in the sky" otherwise known as the great migration, only to keep hearing the same theories,Ive heard now that it was too strong of NW wind and it needs to be lighter, there still in canada, ive also heard it dont matter what the wind is as the wind is different a mile up n they ride the jet stream. Bottom line is ,it aint what it used to be . Weather or not people want to believe the migration pattern woved west or not. Not hard to believe either why license sales decline every yr.And dont tell me its not about the shooting its just nice to be in the the blind, because thats [PoorWordUsage] ! oh well heres to the next front that will be "the major push" smile

Take a second and type in Waterfowl Migration Reports for 2010 in a google search. You'll find numerous sources of information throughout the continent that document up-to-date migrational movements.

From what I read, and what I see around here, most birds are still in Canada. But that's just me..... crazy Probably lots of birds around if you have the time to scout em' out. ALWAYS birds to be found in the Dakotas!

Local G&F biologist on the radio today said that this storm system likely didn't push a lot of birds down into Nodak, but probably pushed a lot of birds out. I sure hope he's wrong. I'm heading out Saturday for a duck/pheasant day. It'll be interesting to see what's happened in the couple of weeks since I've been out.

Thats been happening for years. But I can't wait till next weekend when we have the swamp nearly to ourselves! Deer opener always seem to push the Mallards down! Its usually one of our best weekends duckin!

I would have to agree with ya on that I've had some really really good shoots on opening day of deer season.

The only thing stopping me from duckin this year is the son wants to deer hunt so I told him no mastter what happensd the week end after we go duckin

I went out a few times last weekend. LOTS of ducks around my area. Dont know and dont care what any migration report says, gotta get out there while theyre around. Teal and woodies are STILL around for all you guys who say they fly out by the opener. Lots of divers too.
