Donating a vehicle to charity

Has anyone donated a vehicle/boat/RV to a charitable organization? I realize it's probably easier in the Metro but I've had a hard time finding a place that will answer their phone or return an e-mail.

I did it down here in the cities. I went through the American Lung Association. It was easy and quick. I don't know if they'd help you out in the Falls tho...

We donated an old beater to a local vocational technical school. We dragged, er, drove it over, they appraised it, gave us a receipt and we wrote it off the taxes. They were really good about it too. The appraisal was the top end of Blue Book and was even right at what we paid for it a couple of years before!!

Most tech schools (ie - Willmar, Alexandria, etc) with an auto program will take these for projects. Also, I have a buddy that donated his car to the Salvation Army for tax purposes.

I tryed, but they didn't want to drive to big lake to pick it up. it wasn't drivable just becuase of the exhuast. the car was worth 3 grand. I ended up giving it away. [PoorWordUsage] on them!

Goodwill will take cars too.

SWMBO and I did two vehicles this way - one was to Courage Center in the Twin Cities, and the other one I can't remember.

One of the vehicles was undriveable, and they came right to our residence and got it - which I thought was pretty good since we live out in the middle of cornfields.

The other vehicle was driveable, so we took it to a Holiday Station they were using as a collection point, and dropped it off there.

Both donations were in the same tax year, and made a considerable impact on the amount of taxes we did not pay that year.

You can do the same thing for groups like Pheasants Forever, etc. One gent donated a car one year for our local PF chapter banquet. We raffled it off as a "hunting car".

Dunwoody Institute will take your auto and give you a receipt too. They have a big Automotive program there.

I donated thru the American Childrens Cancer Society. My experience was good. Can't think of a better group to donate to.

As I said above, I couldn't get a callback from several places. I stumbled onto a local group through someone at work. Now I have a large, empty spot in the driveway. When's the boat and camper show?

Sorry for getting back so late. Been on the road on business (really screwed up my hunting this year!). We donated it to Henn. Tech in Brooklyn Park. The contact there is a guy by the name of 'Doc' Phillips.
