lindy rig
I need a new garage door for my heated garage. I am thinking steel insulated. My wife likes the decorative windows as an option.Any pros/cons to the windows? Or just purley cosmetic? Is C.H.I. a good brand? Thanks
spearchucker
Probably lose some more heat through them and depending on how big they are, thieves can see what is in your garage.
jeffreyd
i dont know if i would spend the money upfront. i added styrofoam to my panels a lot cheaper than what it would have cost me.
lindy rig
Ya, I don't want exposed styrofoam. Would get dirty pretty quick.I was wondering about the loss of heat issue. I had a recommendation to a local place and the guy there said a loss of heat would not happen. They use double paned insulated glass or something. Any other opinions on this?Agree with people looking in. They would be small windows on the top row. I think you'd need a ladder to see in or be freakishly tall. Get'n Jiggy
I've been very satisfied with Clopay Garage doors. Used them many times. You can buy them at the H depot. Windows are a nice xtra both for looks and function, always nice to have some light on the subject.
BoxMN
One thing to consider is fixing them when/if they break. Our contractor said he liked windows, but not the curved or ortherwise "funky shaped" ones, as they are expensive to replace and a bit harder to fix. We went with just square ones along top. Looks good and lets some light in. I like them. Good luck. Also, check and get 2" instead of 1 7/8th" - just a bit bit more solid and bit more insulation. Maybe they only make 2" now, I am not sure. SkunkedAgain
I think that the trade-off is you get some natural light in there but might lose some heat and provide thieves with a few of what's in your garage.
jeffreyd
figure i live in the desert in az, and foam in my 15 yr old door is still white. Granted I dont start the cars with the door closed (unless wife is pushing my buttons) but in the summer time it is near 130 degrees in there. Winter time is around 60. caseymcq
I had a door with the windows and really liked it. The windows weren't too terribly big so they were mounted fairly high on the door. They let natural light in and the only thing potential thieves got a look at was the ceiling and the back of the grage. I would reccomend getting a door with windows.
