MNTRAX?

Color of course makes elements easier to distinguish from each other including different land types, roads from trails and streams, etc. However, MNTRAX will and does work on non-color GPS units including the H20. The speed of the older H2O's processors aren't the best so the screen refreshes are a bit slow as MNTRAX has lots of data. I don't have a MNTRAX example but have a NDTRAX example to show how this would work. If you can't tell the type of land, you can always put your cursor on it and the label of the land will show.

Another option if you are trying to do this on a budget is get a new or even refurbished Garmin Nuvi which is an automotive GPS. I realize these are not for serious outdoor use but it will allow you to use it in your truck for not only hunting but for other purposes as well. For $100 or less, you could have a color touch screen GPS which also takes the TRAX chips. Just a thought. If you have any questions on what GPS units work really well including handhelds, automotives, cross-over just ask here please.

Thanks, that is what I needed to see. I am looking more for the boundaries of the state land near private land. Up here by LOW where I live there is a ton of state land with some private and indain land mixed in. This would be by far easier then looking at plot maps, especialy where there are no roads. Do you have LOW county all plotted out? I will be prdering up a chip soon.

MNTRAX covers the entire state so this would include LOW county. I am not sure what you are referring to by PLOT. PLAT is a term a lot of folks use when referring to land ownership from a private perspective showing all parcels of land and the owner's name such as a county PLAT book. MNTRAX don't show private land ownership just public ownership at this point for MNTRAX. For the entire state, MNTRAZ do show section lines and Township, Range and Section numbers for all sections in MN.

MNTRAX do show the state land and you will be able to tell the public from the private so MNTRAX should be just what you are looking for.

going4it,

Did you order it from the outdoor store or directly from Kirsch's Outdoor Products? Please contact me so I can find out what happened to your order because at most it should be a matter of a few days. I believe Jerkbait is saying he had it the next day already. If I put in my email address or phone number on a FM thread, it gets scrambled so go to Google and type in Kirsch's Outdoor Products and choose About Us on the left hand side, and you can get my phone number and email address from there.

So it took you just over a week to get yours? I am waiting for mine and keep checking the mail and then the dissapointment hits.

No, I order it directly from Kirsh and had it the next day. Still can't beleive it was that quick from S.D. to NW MN.. Almost seems like he had it in the mail before I ordered it.

Not to put you down, but the I phone works like carp up here in NW MN. I have a friend that has one and hardly gets service up here. Now the Droid on the other hand has gotten great reviews up here. But still when you get deep in the forest up here there is no cell service.

I appreciate the comments on this thread Acemac about an Iphone app. It never hurts to ask. Iphones, Droids, Blackberrys, etc are all potential options. Marketshare, support, development time and effort, updating, usuability, are all things I consider when looking at additional platforms and for now stand alone GPS units have been the main focus.

For in the field hunting and fishing, handhelds still are the best option but for around $100 or less, a person can buy a touch screen 4.3" or 5" Garmin Nuvi automotive GPS that they can put on the dash of their truck and not have to worry about a cellphone etc. The cell phone GPS units have driven the price of the automotives down so cheap and reasonable that there is little reason not to have one. Just a thought if you don't want to stick a lot of money into another GPS.

    • Aw, man, sorry to hear that.  Shed some tears and remember her well.  They all take a piece of our hearts with them; some more than others.
    • yes sorry for your loss..  our dogs are always special...
    • Truly sorry to hear that duffman! I know that feeling.  Keep the good memories
    • Chamois passed away this weekend a couple days short of her 13th bday. What a great dog to hang out with here at home and on distant adventures. Gonna miss ya big time my little big girl.
    • Sounds pretty sweet, alright. I will check them out, thanks.
    • If you really want to treat your wife (and yourself) with a remote operated trolling motor, the Minn Kota Ulterra is about easy as it gets.  Auto stow and deploy is pretty awesome.  You just have to turn the motor on when you go out and that the last time you have to touch it.   24V 80lb.  60 inch shaft is probably the right length for your boat.  They ain’t cheap - about $3k - but neither one of you would have to leave your seat to use it all day.
    • Wanderer, thanks for your reply. I do intend for it to be 24 volt, with a thrust of 70-80. Spot lock is a must (my wife is looking forward to not being the anchor person any more).  With my old boat we did quite a lot of pulling shad raps and hot n tots, using the trolling motor. Unlikely that we will fish in whitecaps, did plenty of that when I was younger. I also need a wireless remote, not going back to a foot pedal. We do a fair amount of bobber fishing. I don't think I will bother with a depth finder on the trolling motor. I am leaning toward moving my Garmin depth finder from my old boat to the new one, just because I am so used to it and it works well for me. I am 70 years old and kinda set in my ways...
    • Dang, new content and now answers.   First, congrats on the new boat!   My recommendation is to get the most thrust you can in 24V, assuming a boat that size isn’t running 36V.  80 might be tops?  I’m partial to MinnKota.     How do you plan to use the trolling motor is an important question too.     All weather or just nice weather?   Casting a lot or bait dragging?   Bobber or panfish fishing?   Spot lock?  Networked with depth finders?  What brand of depth finders?
