Where do you see this? I don't see anything on Pelican...only WI, SD and Winnipeg.

Have any of you guys participated in these qualifiers? Looks pretty cool.

tsande, I fished the Osakis qualifier and last years championship. They are a blast and it is definitly the best ice fishing tournament format out there. To fish it, it is definetly a learning curve to be able to compete at this level. Last years championship was one of the toughest bites I have ever seen and the team that won it drilled an est. 500 holes per day just to find fish. You'll see the ultimate in portable ice fishing using all of todays best eletronics. I have learned so much in two tournaments about truely being portable. I encourage everyone to signup as it's a true ice fishing tournament and nothing like a derby!!

I will disagree with anyone that has a preception that these tournaments hurt a fishery. The Osakis quailifer was two winters ago and we continue to catch more and bigger gills since the tournament. Lake like these specially one like Pelican hold thousands if not millions of panfish and in no way would a one day quailier put a dent into the fishery. It will profile the lake more, well by the looks of it last spring I think enough people already know about the lake and also the in-fisherman arcitle wouldn't help that cause, also. Besides by profiling the lake and having the quailifer here would help out local business. A lake like Pelican produces big panfish and will continue to produce big panfish (as long as DNR doesn't drain it) no matter what the fishing pressure is without it being netted. Just my 2 cents.

With the amount of people that will already be out there and the additional amount the tournament will bring there wont be anywhere to get away from the crowds. The lake does not need the extra attention the average size is already decending, but there is no future for the lake anyway, it is what it is..

Agreed. I did promotional photography at the Rhinelander, Wis., event last year for NAIFC and the Ice Men Reality TV series. Definitely a fine and classy set of lads, and they work their arses off to find fish. Doesn't matter if hawgs are no longer present in any numbers in the fishery they're on. They're competing against each other, not some mythical fish size.

The wore me out after a day's fishing, and I wasn't even fishing! grin

Top notch group! smile

What a shame. The bite window there is already small. Non-existant after something like that.

Really please provide your study and experience with this knowledge you have. Believe me this tournament will not effect the bite or numbers of fish in Pelican Lake. I have fished the tournament lakes before, during and after it has no effect on a fishery. If anything you attend the seminars and the event you'll learn more about this fishery and will be able to catch more and bigger fish daily after this tournament.

Pelican is a fun lake to fish but it gets pounded so hard lately that it isn't going to sustain whether they drain it or not. On with the tourny! From what I gather, the tournament turn out will probably be less than an average day's fishing turn out on Pelican anyways!

i think its the fact they are bringing more publicity to pelican, everyone knows its gets fished to death but the in-fisherman article and now this just brings more and more attention to this lake that is getting fished to death

    • Truly sorry to hear that duffman! I know that feeling.  Keep the good memories
    • Chamois passed away this weekend a couple days short of her 13th bday. What a great dog to hang out with here at home and on distant adventures. Gonna miss ya big time my little big girl.
    • Sounds pretty sweet, alright. I will check them out, thanks.
    • If you really want to treat your wife (and yourself) with a remote operated trolling motor, the Minn Kota Ulterra is about easy as it gets.  Auto stow and deploy is pretty awesome.  You just have to turn the motor on when you go out and that the last time you have to touch it.   24V 80lb.  60 inch shaft is probably the right length for your boat.  They ain’t cheap - about $3k - but neither one of you would have to leave your seat to use it all day.
    • Wanderer, thanks for your reply. I do intend for it to be 24 volt, with a thrust of 70-80. Spot lock is a must (my wife is looking forward to not being the anchor person any more).  With my old boat we did quite a lot of pulling shad raps and hot n tots, using the trolling motor. Unlikely that we will fish in whitecaps, did plenty of that when I was younger. I also need a wireless remote, not going back to a foot pedal. We do a fair amount of bobber fishing. I don't think I will bother with a depth finder on the trolling motor. I am leaning toward moving my Garmin depth finder from my old boat to the new one, just because I am so used to it and it works well for me. I am 70 years old and kinda set in my ways...
    • Dang, new content and now answers.   First, congrats on the new boat!   My recommendation is to get the most thrust you can in 24V, assuming a boat that size isn’t running 36V.  80 might be tops?  I’m partial to MinnKota.     How do you plan to use the trolling motor is an important question too.     All weather or just nice weather?   Casting a lot or bait dragging?   Bobber or panfish fishing?   Spot lock?  Networked with depth finders?  What brand of depth finders?
    • We have bought a new boat, which we will be picking up this spring. It is an Alumacraft Competitor 165 sport with a 90 horse Yamaha motor. I will be buying and installing a trolling motor,  wondering if I can get some recommendations on what pound thrust I will want for this boat?  Also, I will be selling my old boat, is there a good way to determine the value on an older boat ( mid-80's with a 75 horse 2-stroke  Mariner motor)  I will appreciate any help with these questions.
