I have 6 of them (27s) for trolling Lake Superior ,,I haven't encountered any problems but I do back off on the drags when storing for long periods ,,I wouldnt have a problem buying a few more (47s) for lead core as they seem pretty solid of the money

I have one and like it, I've some issues with the counter not displaying the 3rd digit correctly but no biggie. Also guys swear by the Okuma and the Shakespere Arsenal (I also have one of those and like it).

I'm a hardcore shimano guy and spend a lot of money on my other reels but this is one catagory where I think it pays to get one of these low priced options.

Line counter reels are not a maintenance free tool. There are extra gears and parts associated with the line counter that are not in a regular reel. With proper care they will last years and most of the good ones can be rebuilt. Line counters are just like everything else, you get what you pay for. A $30 line counter isn't going to last as long as a $200 line counter.

A line counter reel takes much more abuse than most reels since they are used for trolling. The drags get a heck of a shock when trolling at 3MPH and get hit by a 8lb walleye or a 20lb pike. Reeling in a fish while in current or still trolling puts a heck of a strain on the gears as well.

Just keep them clean on the inside as well as the outside, oil them up a couple times a year and it will last a long time.

Thanks Guys!!! Ordered a 27 and a 47 series combo deal.

Another brainbuster for you guys...I wanna spool up the 47 with lead( never used the stuff in my life) How do you go about putting it on the reel?? I would guess start with some backing, put leadcore on, and the put a leader of some sort on??

Thanks for any help!! cant wait for some cool october nights to put this stuff to use.

I think you'll be happy with your choice, Nate. I've got a couple of 27s for my walleye trolling reels and they've been great so far. For the price on them, you really can't go wrong.

I would put some mono on and then use a back to back uni knot to put some power pro on then do the same to the lead and then a mono leader. You will need to slide out about 2-4" of lead to be able to tie the knots.

One thing to keep in mind when trolling with lead is that if your leader is short, say 10' or so the dive curve of the lure does not come into play, but if you use a long leader, say 50' or so then the dive curve for 50' out comes into play. I, and most people I have fished with use 10' leaders. This keeps the depth curve simple, all you have to think about is at X speed and X feet my lure will be Y feet down. Change lure run the same speed and same footage, lure is the same depth. Hope this helps.
