Etrex for Fishing

I am looking for a cheap used GPS. The Etrex seem to fit my price range. If I get one that accepts the lakemaster maps will it work well for marking and finding fishing locations?

I know there are better (more expensive) units out there but I am wondering if I can get by with one of these.

Sure you can get by with a Etrex, even a non mapping GPS is better than nothing at all. It's all about marking ' that spot ' and getting back to it if you need to and my old GPS II and Etrex Vista have done great jobs of doing that over the years ( and will continue to get used ), all I had was a Lakemaster paper map but if you fish lots of different lakes, a chip will definetly be more convenient.

Not sure what your price range is but keep your eyes open, some of Garmin's very good mapping GPS's are going end of life and there are some good deals to be had out there right now if you look around.

If you get one, doesn't matter which one, make sure the software in the GPS is up to the latest version.

Does Garmin put chip technology in the Etrex line or will it require PC interface with Mapsource? Either way will work well.

The Etrex's with the "X" designation can use micro SD's cards as well, otherwise you upload mapping via serial port or USB.
