What type of line?

Hello everyone. What is the best line to use for catfishing? I just bought a rod and reel that I will solely be using for catfishing, and I put on 20lb test braided Fireline. I have had great luck with Original Fireline in the past, but was really disappointed withe braided stuff today. It snapped clean off 3 times today, two of which were on snags, and the third of which I was just setting the hook. So, im going to get some new line and up the lb test, but what line do you find that you lose the least amount of fish and hooks on?

Thanks,

Johnny K

I guess I have never tried the power pro or the sufix. I have always used 50# mono. If it gets worn a little I clip it off and re-tie. I use Circle hooks for flats and I really like the stretch factor.

Thanks for the replies! Sounds like 80lb Suffix braided it is! This lot of fireline must have been defective or something. Do you tie braided the same manner as mono? I used a cinch knot. Here is a channel form last night, nothing spectacular, but wish my line didnt break when setting on the big guy!

I use either the palomar or the fish-n-fool knot almost exclusively for everything these days. The palomar is incredibly simple, and up until the fish-n-fool came around, was the 'strongest fishing knot' ... one would almost think that when using a circle, the stretch factor would be negligible ... I think you will be pleasantly surprised with braid. As others said, 65-80 lb suffix is what I use, although my gf uses 80 lb power pro and has had no ill effects so far. Let us know what you decide, and best of luck to you!

P.S. Rob, could you clue me in on where I can find some of that 750 lb. PP? Seems I can only find the 500 lb lately wink haha

That darn 750lb PP always breaks on me too. Where is Jeremy Wade when you need him.

Like nsnutter said, go with the Palomar knot for all braid. The cinch knot will slip on you.

You have to go on a treasure hunt with Captain Morgan to find 750lb power pro. The captain and I were hanging out and playing foosball last night. wink

Yeah..... Well Rumor has it Sailor Jerry's can hook you up with 1000lb PP if you can hang long enough... most never complete the quest in a night.

Thats it! The vanity & self absorbingness in regards to "what fishing line to use" which always seems to bend directly towards product placement in members posted opinions have kilter the catfishing world here at HSO long enough in my book!

I am re-spooling with 200 lb Western Filament Tuf-Line XP. My personal views on Western Filament, Inc., creator of the famous "W-40" lines and the superbraid phenomenon are:

They have been producing quality braided lines for over 50 years. Designed by fishermen for fishermen, these superior braided lines will capture the confidence of the most discriminating angler.

The most advanced braided fishing line on the market today! Aerospace technology has been utilized to produce our TUF-Line XP® fishing line. TUF-Line XP® is more compact, smaller in diameter, packs better on reels, offers better knot performance, casts longer, reduces rod tip wraps, and boasts higher abrasion resistance than any line on the market today. TUF-Line XP® is produced using our Tension Lock Technology meaning that it’s produced under extreme tensions resulting in a line with less than 3% stretch giving you more powerful hook sets and more sensitivity than you could ever imagine! In addition TUF-Line XP is hydrophobic and has excellent U.V. resistance which enables it to last up to four times longer than monofilament. Available in Olive Green or Hi-Vis Yellow. wink
