I definitely will - I have to send them from my crappy old phone to my email first, then upload them. Thanks again for speeding up my learning curve. I had a blast today - 17 bass in about 4 hours of fishing (and four bonus pike). I am officially an addict.

Call me next time you're in town - I owe you a beer.

They were indeed. I would typically slowly troll and cast until I had one hit, then stop and fan-cast for a while. I picked up 2-3 fish from several different patches of rice & rushes and covered a lot of ground. It was a blast!

I went wayyyy to the north end of the bay - started from the north end and made my way back towards the middle, working all the patches of rice and rushes along the way. I'd like to go back where we were one of these days and see how it produces when the weather is a little more cooperative.

I remembered what you had said about lone piece of structure, and kinda used that idea - except it wasn't with lone dock, it was with thick but isolated rice patches in the middle of big weed flats. That's where I picked up the vast majority of the fish. See - you taught me not just how to fish, but how to think about it smile

Oh - and I did pick up some sunglasses from Reeds today...I almost went blind yesterday fishing without them!

Good to hear, is your baitcaster giving you anymore problems or are you more comfortable casting with it now? I'm assuming the rice is really getting tall and tougher to fish so now would be a good time during prime-time to motor up into a good spot in the rice and just anchor and fish it thoroughly and let the water calm down the fish will relax and you should catch more fish in just the little area your sitting in. At last light try frogs and work them slower than your patience can handle you'll be suprised at the results.

Now that you found a dock pattern look for the exact dock system or layout in other parts of the bay you just might see how fish will relate to the exact cover and location. Take into account what side of the bay or direction the sun was shinning on the docks this too will help put the "pieces" together when and what types of docks to fish.

Feel free to email me not to bore the rest of the FM readers with my typing?

thanks,

mr

The way I was told the law is you are not allowed to make your own path into the rice. If a fish brings you in there, you are ok. If there is an existing path, you are ok. If you drift in, you are ok. If you go into it under any power, you are not ok. That may of changed, I am not sure.

Granted, odds are high that you will not be seen, but not a chance worth taking IMO.

I have no facts but I was under the impression that you could go into rice w/trolling motor IF the rice isn't standing up and apparent on a stock of some sort this would be like knocking down a crop of corn when an ear is visible, this does bring up some questions on the legality of recreating in rice beds. I just might have to do some research when I have some down time, unfortunetly I don't have any this week.

Just got back from fishing on Savant Lake, ON and looking forward to chasing bass some more smile

MR - I feel pretty good with the baitcaster now. It was just a matter of practice, practice, practice.

Re: wild rice - I haven't actually gone INTO the beds yet, I've just either fished the edges (especially where the rice and rushes come together has been hot) or trolled close and then cast as far as I can into the bed and worked it back over the top. I'll definitely remember to cut the motor and drift if I want to work the inside of a bed though.

The rice is getting taller and thicker for sure. When it gets to dense to fish in there, what are some other presentations/locations I should think about?

hang it up and start chasing muskies!!!!! :o)

I can't say I've fished the rice late in the summer but becuase of the tall rice I'm sure it isn't an easy task to fish and if your luckly to get one on, well lets say, good luck. Fishing around home on the weedlines are now well established and have no desire to "rassle" with rice.

Good luck,

mr
