Lowrance 522

Scott K

Question

I figured I would start my own thread. My 522 would lose bottom in any soft bottom, it would just flash, it has gotten worse as time goes on, I will be getting a new ducer soon, hopefully that will fix my problem.

Any how my concern is after trying to do a soft reset, and a hard reset to try to correct the issue of losing the bottom, now every time I turn the power on, it does a hard reset, and I lose all my trails that were marked. When it powers up, it starts off on the map of the US, then I have to zoom in, and my trails were all deleted. Another problem I noticed when trying to prevent losing my trail when I last fished, I left the power on, so I could follow my tracks back to the landing, the trail was there, but it had me about 200 yds away from the river I was on, and the track I took to begin with. Now the river is only 40 yds wide or so, and my first track followed the river down the middle, on my return trip, it had me about 200 yds off on shore. What could have happened?

That business about the hard reset on power up is strange. Mine sits in my basement all winter on a shelf and when I put it back on the boat in the spring it takes up where it left off, when I turn it on.

Well I bought the new ducer, but that wont cure my gps, and the resetting, but hopefully I can see bottom. I wont be able to try it out until I get my props back from getting fixed though. Maybe I will try another hard reset manually, and see if that cures everything.

I see the potential for two different problems there bud...ducer may be bad...and that should fix the sonar aspects of it and the newest update is a good plan too...the accuracy of the unit is causing the trails and tracks to go far afield on you....this is what I suspect anyhow?

Try to keep the head unit upright, and not tipped back at an angle. This was/is a common problem with the 300/500 Lowrance/Eagle series internal GPS Antennas.

If tipped back, they loose acquisition of satellites and then accuracy quickly suffers for it....so your trails wonder off by many yards this way or that way from one pass to another.

Another potential contributing factor to deterioration of GPS accuracy is if the unit sits behind a windshield, this too may further exasperate the problem and accuracy is often even further diminished.

Try to keep it upright, and away from anything that may diminish satellite acquisition and accuracy. Often a higher mount like a RAM Mount, may help with this problem.

Thanks Ed, it does have the latest update, I do have the head tilted back some, and there is a windshield. I will give those things a try, but that still doesnt explain why it resets itself everytime I power it on? Is there an internal battery that is replaceable?

Not sure about an internal battery..but that may explain it going to default every time you power down and up again?

Try calling the Tech-Line at Lowrance and see if they can better advise you of that issue. Mid week is the best time to try to get into a tech to chat.

I replaced the ducer in mine, the depth is reading great now. I also tipped the screen back upright, and the gps lines up straight. Although when I shut the main power off, it still loses my tracks, and does a reset. Maybe a setting?

OK, the depth is fine now with the new ducer, it doesnt hard reset, but it will always erase my way points and trails, after it gets shut off. It doesnt start out with the map of the us any more after turning it on. Does anyone have any ideas, or a good number to actually get a hold of someone at Lowrance?

I will email you Tom, I got the response I figured, out of warranty, send in the unit with $361 and they will take a look at it. I just dont understand how Lowrance can even be in business with such a poor customer service!

Seems that the standing charge for even replacing a knob is $361.00.

We will get this corrected. I will get you another number with a rep who should be able to address your concerns. He is very knowledgeable with Lowrance products.

Huh, maybe part of the last update? Oh well, $361 and they will give it back to me and tell me they fixed it crazy

Pier, let me know if yours is clearing the paths, that would be nice to know when talking to the rep.

Still clearing the routes. I was frustrated initially by this the first couple times but now I just save the route if I want to. I haven't done or nor will I do any hard or soft resets as I'm very happy with how the unit is working over-all and don't want to change things "knocks on wood"
