Had these symptoms a few years back on my 2003 F150 w/ 5.4V8. Ran a can of SeaFoam through it. Could feel and hear it getting better as I drove.

Pulled the neg. off the battery to reset and get the "check engine" light to go off. Problem never came back. Light never came back on.

I don't think pulling the battery cable will remove the code from the computer. The only way to remove is with a scan tool. It will stay as history, but be essentially cleared after x number of drive cycles automatically.

im not a mechanic, but i can fix things. ive always taken the possitive cable off the battery and touched it to something that would be a ground. this i think clears the computer memory of a trouble code. disconnecting the negative usually just turns the check engine light off until it senses a problem again.

but, im probably wrong!!

Vister, I wouldnt do that on newer vehicles. You wouldnt believe how many calls I get because they did this and now the instrument cluster doesnt work, or a lighting control module. Some of these modules dont like any sort of voltage spike at all.

?????

I have had to take the neg. cable and touch the poss. cable when the neg. was disconnected on a foreign car(don't remember what model). This was what alldata said to do in the procedure for clearing memory. I have not seen it in newer model years though.
