Hello All:

First time poster here. So I wanted to say "hello" and that I am excited to become a member. I live in River Falls, WI which is about 10 miles south of Hudson off of 94.

I found about a dozen mushrooms yesterday near Baldwin, WI and want some experts to ID them. I think they are morels, but want to be sure before I eat them. They were found near a dead elm and both the stem and cap are hollow.

I also found some ramps.

Even if the mushrooms are not morels, it was still a good day in the woods. I was pretty excited to find the ramps. I can not wait until I get to eat some of those tonight laugh

NoWiser - Thanks for the ID! I appreciate it. Hopefully they will be enjoyed tonight with the ramps.

Has anyone else found ramps with white/green stems instead of the purple? I found both and it seems the white/green-stemmed ramps were possibly older because there were more leaves, larger bulb, and the start of the flowering stem (maybe called a scape??).

Thanks again!

David

One tip if your going to sautee your morels in butter. Place the cut pieces in a bowl for a few hours and them pour of the water. I would do this twice as the morels contain a high percentage of water.

Then your sauteed morels won't be watered down when you make them.

Enjoy.

Tasty looking morels, nice ramps too!

I've been having trouble finding good pickable ramps. I don't know if they're not big enough yet, or what the deal is. Maybe I'm looking for the wrong thing. Would really like some like what you have pictured to incorporate into some meals!

We call those leeks. Found quite a bit this year and they are still growing. You know they are are leeks(or ramps) because they grow with two shoots from the ground and are purplish near the stem.

Thanks for the comments!

This was my first year picking ramps (wild leeks - same thing, just different names). I was surprised to find that only some of the ramps had the purple stems. In my picture, some of the stems are purple; some are not. I also noticed the purple-stemmed ramps usually had one leaf, while the green/white-stemmed ramps had two or three leaves. Also, some of the green/white-ramps also seem to show the start of flower stem (maybe called a scape??). So I wonder if some ramps matured early or had an early start.

I hope to get back to that spot later this week to find more morels and ramps. grin

ilikefood, on the morels with brown stems like the one in your pic, just cut any brown areas out or any other areas that don't looked like they formed well or have mold spots. Nice find and welcome to the site! smile

Leech - Thanks for the info. I am actually letting a couple morels soak right now. Then saute with the ramps and butter. Should be a tasty snack before bed.

Thank you for the welcoming.

    • As a recovering machinist, I can appreciate that.  If the spec is 0.001 - 0.0015, then clearly the correct measurement is 0.00125, duh…
    • I just figured that it is easy enough to just get a 3 bank so when the boat is not in use I can keep all 3 batteries charged. I have not bough a charger yet, maybe I will give it some more thought. Edit: After thinking this over, with the size, weight, and heat output of the charger (as well as the cost) I think it makes sense to just buy a 2 bank charger, I have a smaller charger i can use on the starting battery when the boat is sitting at home. Forgive me, for i am a retired engineer and I have to obsess over everything...
    • Congrats on the motor!  I think you’ll like it.   I can’t say much on the charger location but I’ve seen them under the lid in back compartments and under center rod lockers.  160 degrees is more than I expected to hear.   Curious why you’re opting for a 3 bank charger with a 24V trolling motor.  Unless you don’t feel you be running you big motor enough to keep that battery up as well?
    • I did buy an Minnkota Ulterra, thanks for the recommendations. I had a bunch of Cabela"s bucks saved up, which helped. Now i need to get an onboard battery charger. Where do you guys mount these things in your boat? The manufacturer I am looking at {Noco genius) says tht their 3-bank charger will run at 160 degrees, seems like a lot of heat in an enclosed compartment? Thanks for any input on this.
    • You're very lucky a troop of Sea Monkey's didn't carry you away.
    • Wasn't terrible at a state park beach. Antelope island maybe.  I wouldn't recommend it as a beach destination tho.  Figured I was there, I'm getting in it.
    • The water looked and smelled disgusting with hundreds of thousands of birds sh*tting in there.  About as gross as the Salton Sea. When I duck hunted there I didn't even want to touch the water.
    • It's kinda gross with the algae in the summer but I got in it anyway.  Wanted to see the increased bouyancy at work.  You can kinda tuck yourself into a ball and you'll just float with your head above water.  When dry off you look diamond encrusted with the salt.
    • We went to the flats too. I dipped a tire on the rental car onto it just to say I’ve been there, but it was still pretty soft from winter melt. After seeing some moron in a BMW suv get dragged out of the muck I had no intention of repeating his stupidity.
    • I've been out on the flats. It's like being on a different planet
