Activision Blizzard may have let key players on the Infinity Ward team slip through its fingers, but the company sure isn’t done with the Call of Duty franchise.

Treyarch, developer of 2008’s Call of Duty: World at War, said Friday that it will release the next game in the series, Call of Duty: Black Ops, on November 9.

The game’s official HSOforum reveals no plot, setting or theme. There are no screenshots. More information should be forthcoming soon, since the game’s trailer is set to debut tonight at 12:40 a.m. Eastern on GameTrailers TV.

Treyarch is something of a utility player for Activision Blizzard. The development team has worked on a handful of Call of Duty games as well as sports and licensed movie games.

Update:

UK retailer GAME has apparently confirmed the multinational Cold War setting in its product description for the game, which reads: "Call of Duty Black Ops is the next installment in the thrilling Call of Duty franchise. Packing an amazing single-player story that will see you fight across the globe in locations such as Cuba, Vietnam and the Arctic." Since Vince Zampella and Jason Ward's lawsuit against Activision said Infinity Ward had control of all Call of Duty games set after the Vietnam War, a Cold War setting is almost assured.

Thought Activision was done with Treyarch? And I thought the COD franchise was done? I am definitely not complaining, I have been playing W@W all weekend and some days I prefer it to MW2. Personally I think Treyarch did a great job with it, but their servers sometimes are a little to be desired.

Thanks LIMT> I had seen the logo and trailer on the Xbox Live Dashboard.

Ok this does seem cool:

I also though COW was going to be fazed out, but I am sure if someone is not involved with the Modern Warfare title and they have rights to the COD title, they are going to make some money.

From what I understand, Activision owns the COD series but Infinity Ward and Treyarch are the two companies that actually develop the game. Infinity did COD4 and MW2, and Treyarch did COD3 and WaW.

Yeah Activision just handles distribution, advertising, and the legal mumbo jumbo while the studios actually design the games.

I think they have been trading off every year since CoD1 but not sure since i started at MW. I think IW did CoD2, MW and MW2. Treyarch did CoD1, 3, and W@W.

You know?grin

The more & more I read/think about COD & MW and the battles which include millions for (I assume about 50-100 people) all involved, I just think this is going to cost "us" people who play these games much more in the end. smirk

I say fight for something that is yours, but now to experience game play with either the new COD & MW it is going to cost the players twice as much. By what I have read into this, I assume COD will be a game you go to Gamestop to buy with maybe online multi-player & if MW comes out with anything like what was leaked it will be in a form of a download & live only. I could see this costing us an easy $200 when these games have been played to the max. smirk . Not including Xbox live's cut and gosh forbid an upgraded Xbox coming out. laugh .

This could be costly because someone only got 11,000,000.00 instead of 12,000,000.00 (figures just for refrence). I may have been more extreme and I think some people were cut out on purpose before the MW2 cash-cow started to pour in. In the end to me it is someone elses drama I have no stake in, there for short of some pleasure playing these games, it is actually as fun keep up on this as it would be if I stared at the rabbits running around my yard all day.

I do also see this as an avenue to open up the market a little. I am very sure this does not mean the new COD-BO ( laugh ) will cost only $39.95, but could lead into new tech & advances faster than it would have been if every one was hugging each other. wink

That's my understanding as well. Basically the studios are like subcontractors, with Activision owning the property/rights. Activision has gotten too big to develop everything in house.

Really? After the Treyarch's World at War debacle I'm a little gun shy on what Black Ops is going to be like.

Granted there were things I didn't like about MW2, such as riot shields, heartbeat sensors, and ridiculous marathon knifers, but overall it was much better than WaW, IMO. Attack dogs? Puh-lease.

Im sure Ill get hooked on Black Ops just as I have every one since COD4. I dont expect Black Ops to give me the same excitement that COD4 did but thats just because COD4 was so fresh and new to me at the time. The developers keep taking the same recipe, sticking with previous things that worked, tossing out things people didnt like and adding some new ideas. Its really hard to screw it up to the point people wont like it. WaW really wasnt bad, its just hard to follow up a game like MW.

I think the biggest problem that WaW had was it went too far back. I never played MW, only got in at WaW, but my cousins and friends said that they hated not having red dot sights, other techy stuff.

That was the biggest gripe that I had.

Even LMITOUT hinted at that with his attack dogs comment.

BUT, in WW2 timeframe, I don't believe they had harriers to call in, the ability to have heart beat sensors, etc.

Their wasnt anything in CoD4 that wasnt in WaW. They made things up, the aperature was the red dot sight.

What was wrong with the attack dogs? What else should they have used as a 7 killstreak?

My biggest complaint with MW2 is some of the "techy stuff". The HBS in the game is so lame. They should have left it out or atleast not make it able to tell the differance between friend and foe.
