HugoBox
I was reading the line post and almost added this there but didn't want to hijack it. I kind of think of the Palomar as the Kleenex of knots. Its pretty much all I know and all I tie, but I'm sure some of you use others. Also, I'm pretty picky about making sure everything gets cinched up properly and have found that trying to get a heavy gauge 12-18 inche leader though the big loop without kinking anything can be a pain. Nick Kuhn
I use an improved clinch knot. Easy to tie and with as strong as the materials are that muskie fisherman use the 1-2% loss in knot strength compared to a palomar is negligible.
mainbutter
I use a uni-knot for basically everything, it's just the knot I was first taught to tie, so I tie it easily and quickly. As Nick already pointed out, the line we use is already so strong that a bit of loss of strength is negligible. When I fish braid, I fish line that is at least 2x as strong as I need it to be to not break, if not MUCH higher. I go the exact opposite route of most fishermen and try make my fishing line the strongest (rather than the weakest) part of the connection to myself and the fish.. stronger than the rod, hook, swivels, or lures. Bassinbob84
I use the palomar for everything but when I pull tight I only pull the loose end that gets trimmed. I keep the main line tight but don't take line from the knot with it. From experiance the slip/clinch a horrible knot for braid because braid slips on itself and doesn't grab like mono does. Shawn Kellett
Palomar for me. If you wet the knot before you tie it you can avoid the kinks. The only knot you need...aside from the back to back uni knot for tying 2 lines together.
propster
Shawn, he's not worried about kinking the line, he's talking about getting a leader through the loop and kinking that. Palomar is a great knot but if you want to avoid what you're talking about try the super uni knot. Stronger than the palomar and you can tie it with your eyes shut practically. fatfinger
i was wondering if the palomar was popular.its all ive used for the last several years & never had a problem with it(after its tied).i blamed the kinks on my laziness or haste.sometimes i have to pull leader/lure through from the snap end to avoid kinking.i cant think of an easier knot with such strength. Nick Kuhn
The Fish-N-Fool knot actually beats the Palomar in strength and doesn't look all that difficult to tie if you have some dexterity.
Shawn Kellett
You can still use the palomar with a leader if you make a bigger loop. You just need to know which end to pull when tightening so you don't wast 6" of line.
Fish&Fowl
I've got a new knot I've been trying and it seems to be holding up pretty well. I tie the first part of the palomar and make the loop rather small. Then I wrap the tag end around the main line 6 times and run it back through the loop and pull tight. I'm going to put it to the test a little more before I name it
propster
Nick, the Fish-n-Fool knot is the super uni knot, just that it was around long before that guy named it as the Fish-n-Fool. And yes, Knot Wars tested it stronger than the Palomar. Like I said, the Palomar is a great knot and most will likely never have a problem with it, it's just the uni is easier to tie when you do have leaders or lures hanging off the end of the line. Shack
The double uni with a burn has (as far I can remember) never failed for me. I have brought up logs with it and using 80lb PP. I have had the line fail before the knot even would.
clm
palomar for me as well. i have not had any problems with it yet.
Comit 2
Am I the only one here who uses more then one knot. Anyone use a Bimini Twist? Or other knots?
propster
You bet (not that particular one), but I don't use any of the others for this application (braid to muskie leaders/baits)
HugoBox
Does anyone use the Bucher Power something-or-other knot? I think I saw it in M.H. but never really bothered cause my hands automatically tie a palomar without even thinking about it.

50inchpig
this might be the one you're looking for, box - might try it this year too. someone gave me this gigantic swimbait to throw and i don't want a wimpy knot blowing the deal for me.
HugoBox
someone gave me this gigantic swimbait to throw and i don't want a wimpy knot blowing the deal for me.I'd worry more about the questionable construction of said swimbait. I bet it explodes the first time a fish looks at it.
Rebel9921
Been using for past 3 years and will continue to use... Bucher Power Knot... Its gaining popularity in past 1-2 years... ease to tie... Steve Heitig mentioned he'd tie a Power Knot, with 20 inches long tag which he would then double back and tie into surgeon's knot... Reason for this is that you'd have "2 lines" connected to the leader... Might give this a try this year...
