Found my first ever morrells !!! Thanks to all those who shared their tips on how to hunt for them. Very helpful. I was driving for work down this road when I convinced myself to stop and take a look. Found some dead-standing aspen trees on a slight hill near a river. (looked too good to be true!) After seeing that first one it seemed like the others just sort of "popped up" all around it. I only had about 10min time, so I'll try again tomorrow.

I'm hooked.

A couple questions: Whats the best way to clean them? And to dry them for later on?

Thanks for the replys!

I like to rinse them in cold water, then cut them in half lengthwise and then weash them out good. That will get rid of all the little dirt and bugs.

When you eat them after they have been washed, you won't be eating gritty morels.

I dehydrate all my extras.

Nice find! Now its in your blood grin I don't try and keep them. What I don't use, I give away. Just soak them for awhile, then rinse. Cut once length wise and soak um some more....then fry um how you like um.

I just soak in cold water for a good while, then cut them in half and freeze in zip lock bags any extras. I have about 8 bags of extras in there right now! grin When they thaw out they seem a little limp but once you fry them up in butter and a little garlic sait they taste just the same. Freeze dry is good if you have the machine. It's always fun to hit the mother load, but you keep looking over your shoulder to see who's watching you! laugh

To dry, all you need to do is to cut them in half, remove bugs/excessive dirt, placed on drying rack, leave it in front of a fan so it blows on them for about 6 hours. Once done with the initial stage, I store them in a container without a lid so it completely dries out. After a couple days, it should be comepletely dried out and you can store them pretty much indefinately in an air tight container.

When drying, I dont like to soak them or wash them. In my opinion and experience, I think most of the intense morel mushroom flavor are almost "washed" away when soaked or washed before drying. Plus when you rehydrate them, all the dirt comes off anyways. Just make sure you use the liquid that you rehydrate the mushrooms in.

Thanks everyone !! I ended up eating them up fresh with my family. and Dark, you are right, it is now in my blood crazy. I went out after work just 1 mile down the road and found 18 more. I don't if it was dumb luck or what. It's sounds silly but I felt like a little kid discovering chocolate bars growing out of the ground every time I saw one.

Might have to see a chiropractor, in-between looking for agates and shrooms, my neck is getting sore looking down at the ground all the time.

I'm going to try and dry this batch.

Thanks for the input.

    • Truly sorry to hear that duffman! I know that feeling.  Keep the good memories
    • Chamois passed away this weekend a couple days short of her 13th bday. What a great dog to hang out with here at home and on distant adventures. Gonna miss ya big time my little big girl.
    • Sounds pretty sweet, alright. I will check them out, thanks.
    • If you really want to treat your wife (and yourself) with a remote operated trolling motor, the Minn Kota Ulterra is about easy as it gets.  Auto stow and deploy is pretty awesome.  You just have to turn the motor on when you go out and that the last time you have to touch it.   24V 80lb.  60 inch shaft is probably the right length for your boat.  They ain’t cheap - about $3k - but neither one of you would have to leave your seat to use it all day.
    • Wanderer, thanks for your reply. I do intend for it to be 24 volt, with a thrust of 70-80. Spot lock is a must (my wife is looking forward to not being the anchor person any more).  With my old boat we did quite a lot of pulling shad raps and hot n tots, using the trolling motor. Unlikely that we will fish in whitecaps, did plenty of that when I was younger. I also need a wireless remote, not going back to a foot pedal. We do a fair amount of bobber fishing. I don't think I will bother with a depth finder on the trolling motor. I am leaning toward moving my Garmin depth finder from my old boat to the new one, just because I am so used to it and it works well for me. I am 70 years old and kinda set in my ways...
    • Dang, new content and now answers.   First, congrats on the new boat!   My recommendation is to get the most thrust you can in 24V, assuming a boat that size isn’t running 36V.  80 might be tops?  I’m partial to MinnKota.     How do you plan to use the trolling motor is an important question too.     All weather or just nice weather?   Casting a lot or bait dragging?   Bobber or panfish fishing?   Spot lock?  Networked with depth finders?  What brand of depth finders?
    • We have bought a new boat, which we will be picking up this spring. It is an Alumacraft Competitor 165 sport with a 90 horse Yamaha motor. I will be buying and installing a trolling motor,  wondering if I can get some recommendations on what pound thrust I will want for this boat?  Also, I will be selling my old boat, is there a good way to determine the value on an older boat ( mid-80's with a 75 horse 2-stroke  Mariner motor)  I will appreciate any help with these questions.
