Out of state trip

Planning a trip to NE in a coupe of weeks.Plan on being out there for 3 to 4 days.Never hunted turkeys out of state before,How do you guys bring your birds home.Do you gut them and pack with ice or clean the whole bird and pack on ice.Any suggestions would help. THX Mark

i would check with the local dnr in that area and ours. Just to see what there law require, like SD for phesants my dad always leaves one leg on i think

mrclean's advice is good, though I've never heard of any regs about taking turkeys over state lines-doesn't mean there aren't any.

Personally, I've always cleaned them and put 'em on ice. Heck, if I were you, I'd just plan on taking him to a local taxidermist and let him ship it home to you later this year.

Last year I just gut it, plocked it and packed with ice. I left the legs on and kept the tail.

We butcher and put on ice in a cooler if we need them chilled for a long drive or if one is shot early in the trip. You could also just gut them out and put the whole bird in a bag and put that on ice if you have the cooler space.

We clean them up and pack up the breast meat with the legs and beard in the cooler and tags.We just left NE local grocery store also lets us bring them into his freezer cleaned and he will do that for free until we are ready to get on the road.
