Salt/mineral recipe

Recommended Posts

There was a post last fall for making your own trophy block I believe it was called. There was 3-4 different salts/minerals in the recipe.

I looked back through last fall's stuff (and spent about an hour re-reading some different things), and couldn't find the recipe.

My piles from last fall are all dissolved and would like to put some more on top before the spring rains to get the ground saturated with that stuff a bit more.

Can somebody please repost that recipe for me? Thank you for your time.

i get the stuff at the mans mall, mills FF. 50 pound bag of each: mixin salt, calicium carbonate, Hy-phos. mix altogether, and dump on ground. each batch for me yields 3 mineral sites. the hy-phos is spendier than the others, but contains a load of essential nutrients and minerals. i also add a 50 lb white brine salt block to each mineral site. you get 300 lbs of mineral/salt mix and blocks for around 40 bucks!! hope this helps. good luck

Here is the one that I used and I think it's close to the one that I beleive Harvey Lee posted at some point.

1 part Di-calcium phosphate, this is a dairy feed additive bought at feed stores.

Comes in 50lb Bags at around

2 parts Trace mineral salt, the red and loos kind without the medications.

1 part Stock salt, ice cream salt.

i put a mineral site by each food plot i have. if deer are using the plot, they are more likely to use the mineral site. id say 1 every 40 acres is ideal, depending on the cover and size of the parcel. dont expect to lure deer with them during season though. mineral sites really only work during spring and summer, which is when you want them out there. not only for bucks and their antlers, but for does nursing their fawn(s) it is a huge help as well.

I have 3 sites on 120 acres.

All 3 very close to food plots.

I would disagree very much that they only work in spring and summer. I have shot deer that visited, or were at a mineral site with bow.

And I have seen deer go up to them during gun season. Not that many times, but a few.

On top of that, the deer do use mineral sites well into late fall. I use my mineral sites as a primary trail cam location and I get TONS of pics of deer but its 95% after dark.

I have pics this winter of deer at my mineral licks too.

Primary time for deer to use them is surely spring and summer, but they dont get turned off of them by any means in fall.

Hockey, my point was mineral sites work in spring and summer was in relationship to the deer using the mineral for milk production and antler developement. Sure deer may visit during fall and winter, but deer are trying to eat and pack on pounds. Licking a block or eating soil doesn't do that and they know it. Anyone who has had cameras over mineral sites like myself can and will vouch that deer don't frequent these sites from October on like they do in June and July.

I was replying mainly to this statement you made.

I thought your point was they only work in spring and summer to draw "attention" to them.

My point is just that there are a lot of deer that use them well into the fall season and beyond.

Now regarding antler development, there have been a lot of posts on QDMA about the subject of human influence on antler growth and there isnt a lot of proof we can do anything about it with minerals we try to feed deer.

I for one dont believe I am changing the bucks we have. I use the minerals as an added attractant along with my food plots.
