A Staring Battery Question This Time

gunflint

Question

Is there a possible issue with replacing a 500 CCA marine staring battery with a series 31 700 CCA battery? Starter burn out, low recharge, etc. This is on a 40hp outboard. I have a chance of picking up a like new one very cheap.

Bigger the better. The starter will only draw what it needs. Better for the starter if it isn't under powered. I'm a big fan of using a deep cycle battery for starting. They usually have plenty of CCA. And will last years longer. I always demote my oldest G31 deep cycle to starting duty. And use the new one for my electronics batt.

Electrically, that should not be a problem. However, If your battery is in a tray/ box, you might check that the holder will accept a 31 series battery as most trays/ boxes aren't designed for that length of a bettery. Phred52
