Drive in pike ideas?

Recommended Posts

My wife and I are looking to go on a drive in pike fishing trip to Manitoba or Ontario. We would like to fish within 3-4 hours of Roseau or Warroad but will go further if need be. Can you suggest anywhere for a couple of newly weds to fish in Canada for the first time? We are looking to make a summer trip but also maybe a late ice tip up trip in the next couple weeks...

THANKS FOR ANY HELP YOU CAN OFFER!

Go to the Lower Manitou. Outfitter17 has his info. on here and has a resort on the lake. We go to the Manitou to musky fish and catch plenty of nice pike every time out. Plus, they are numerous and pretty easy to catch. Also, you can fish for lakers, smallies and muskies.

Its about an hour and a half drive from International Falls.

If you are not fishing muskies, I would suggest going prior to the musky opener. That little bit cooler water has the big girls up in the shallows and aggressive!!

You will need to hurry if you want to get in some ice fishing.

on the other hand ice should be out well before May 1 so lots of avails for early pike fishing.

Nungesser lake has awesome walleye fishing and huge pike

I'm partial to anglers kingdom of course.

about a 5 hour drive north of the border

well worth the trip

it's not a drive in but not a fly in

you boat up the river then cross a 300 yard portage via atv and boat about 5 miles down the lake to Pine island.

Hey Kevin, just curious. Looking at your web site, I could be mistaken but many of your pike photos appear to be of you when you were at Way North. Is the idea just to show the success you've had over the years on big pike? What was the name of the tv show you and Debra(?) did at Favourable?

Hi Propster

just checked over my site.

Yes you are mistaken - the only pics from way north that I can find on my HSOforum are in the articles that I wrote on how to catch pike at different times of the year.\

the article describe which lakes that the photos were from

Yes the articles are for instructional purposes

I could reqrite similar articles specific to nungesser lake but the information would be the same - just different pics of different fish.

I do have several ideas for instructional articles specific to Nungesser lake that I hope to have written and posted soon. ( can't say when)

I think maybe its about time to write some articles about walleye fishing.

It's just hard for me not to talk about pike.

the rest of the pics are fish from nungesser.

If I was to publish all the pike photos from all the lakes I've fished over the years I'd guess I would have 3-4000.

I would guess that I have somewhere close to 500 photos of different big pike caught on Nungesser since we opened Anglers Kingdom in 2005

the TV show we used to do was called Outdoor Encounters.

I've been thinkin of doing some new TV shows

problem is time

I used to think I was busy = then I had kids. LOL

regarding ice fishing -

I would estimate you have about 2 maybe 3 weeks left to ice fish on Nungesser. It's never a guarantee but I haven't been out many days without catching at least one 40 incher.

here is a report i just did from the weekend.

We had a pretty good weekend

First at Haydens hockey wind up he won the biggest trophy ( its all about the size of the trophy when you are a kid)

then went to camp - arrived about 6pm

Don, Ton, Jerry Vanderweyst and Jim and Larry were up to camp doing some ice fishing as well.

they had the holes already drilled and were actually just heading back to camp.

they weren't more than 200 yards away when we caught our first walleye.

within the hour Hayden had a 36 inch pike.

the next day we went out about noon and the first fish was a FORTY SIX - 46 INCH PIKE

Hayden has caught a lot of 40 plus pike but I think that is his largest pike to date.

we had to leave early to attend Seannas figure skating windup where she won the biggest trophy for artistic talent and dedication.

the weather was perfect

the fish cooperated

and Seanna and Hayden finished off a great season.

Like I said I could very well have been mistaken, thought I recognized a couple spots. Sounds like you have incredible fishing at Nungesser. Is it good all the way through summer or is it one of those deals where it's really good right after ice out in the dark bays then tough to find them after that? How do you feel your fishing compares to Favourable, being a drive to/portage lake vs a fly to/portage situation? We were at Way North about 6 years ago when you were fishing there, ran into a bad week for sure. You didn't even catch much! Walleye fishing was pretty much unbelievable though.

I didn't catch much???? now I know your mistaken LOL ( just kidding Just kidding) I don't always catch lots. I think I remember the week you were talking about. blue bird skies dead calm for a few days. It was still fun.

I wouldn't say they disappear in the summer.

Nungesser is quite different than most lakes in that the pike spend very little time in the cabbage during mid summer. I concentrate ont he mid lake humps and towards fall on the staging areas for spawning whitefish.

basically go where the walleye are.

I tell people that there are many lakes such as favourable that have more numbers of 35-42 inch pike but I haven't found a lake with more 46 and up. And I've fished over 300 lakes across Canada.

For a combination of awesome walleye fishing and an opportunity for a true high end trophy Pike nungesser can't be beat. drive in or fly in
