Vex Battery Charging ??

broken line

Question

I saw this topic recently but cannot find it. Can I take an old vehicle (12 volt plug end) cell phone charger, cut the end off, replace the ends with those that match the Vex battery and charge the battery by plugging it into the vehicle lighter?

The chargers intended for the 7 amp hr batteries charge at 1/2 amp. You'll be well beyond that plugging into the cig lighter. Charging at those higher amps can ruin the battery and become dangerous. In a pinch it will work if you keep it to 5 minute intervals at most.

The old chargers transformer chargers didn't have a shutoff so you had to keep track of charge times and disconnect the charger from the battery. You will be doing the same a volt meter is a must with those old chargers.

As said the cell phone cords are 3.3-5 volts. You'll need to find an adapter from a 12 volt device. Most have the fuse built in but check and of coarse make sure you have the polarity correct. Remember I said this will work in a pinch and should not be even remotely considered as a primary way to charge your battery.

Another option is just use an auto inverter, a economic one will handle the Vexilar 110 to 12V charger just fine.

I agree 100%, get an power inverter and you can use it for flashers, laptops, etc etc etc.
