Trade a 17-85 for a 17-40L??

I have the opportunity to trade my 17-85 for a 17-40L + a litle cash on my end. As most of you know I shoot a 30D and I have read that some people aren't particularly fond of the 17-40 on a crop body. What do you guys think?? Any insight would be appreciated.

The 17-40 is one of my most used lenses on either a crop or 1.3 body. Mine won't be leaving me anytime soon. One question might be what focal range you might use between 40 and your next range up? I don't use from 40 to 70 all that much even though I have coverage for that range.

As with Dan, the 17-40 is one of my two most used lenses - with the 70-200 right up there regardless of body. I have a nifty-fifty to fill the gap. Great combination of lenses.

Ignore them. The lens performs wonderfully whether it's a 1.6 crop, 1.3 crop or full frame sensor. Just yields different real-world focal lengths based on sensor size, like most any other lens.

I don't have any more 1.6 crop sensor bodies, but I shot a LOT of images with the 17-40 with the 1.6 sensor, and the IQ is excellent.
