Remember they don't make a profit paying out, they make it taking it in. You will need to ride their buts to get money and that first offer will be a joke. I just went through this with AAA on my kids car. They offer $4100 I sent them the NADA book value I found on line showing over $5000 and I ended up with $5019 (tax license included but minus $500 deductible). Say no and get more or you will get hosed! Keep on them until you get the quote too or it will take forever. Be a thorn in their side and they'll want to get you taken care of to be rid of you! Its a hostile business transaction, treat it as such.

In my experience state farm is very fast, maybe 2 or 3 days. If you think their offer is low do some research and come back with a number you think is fair. You don't have to be a pain about it, just respectfully give them your estimate and back it up by evidence (comparable cars for sale now).

I negotiate values a lot in transaction similar to what these insurance adjusters are doing and when I deal with someone that is hostile, asking for something outrageous, or a pain in the rear I treat them differently than someone who is repectful and has done their research. My mom always said "you catch more flies with honey than you do with vineger".

Also if it's a total loss they will require the title before they pay out.

I had a claim with State Farm and was happy with the service and outcome.

Be civil when you work with an adjuster. Request clear expectations and time lines. Traditionally insurance adjuster do not wake up each morning wondering how much they keep from providing a policy holder after a loss. In fact most adusters that I have seen appreciate making people happy and delivering a check. I belive it is one of the more (if not the only) satisying part of their jobs. Do not be abusive to an adjuster and if you're not happy with the way something is turning out, try the "poor me/sympathy" technique, you will get much much further.
