mozy
I need to replace the trolling motor on my 16' aluminum Fisher. I found a bow mount MinnKota Edge 40# on sale at Cabela's and was wondering if anyone had used one and what you thought of it. I would have liked to go with a bit more power, but money is kind of tight and this seems like a really good deal. Anyways, pros, cons, things to look out for? TSchultz
IF you already think it's going to be a bit light on power, it's deffinatley going to be light on power.
JimBuck
I've got a 55lb. Powerdrive on my 16' Sylvan and wish I would have gone bigger. It works in 90% of the applications but that 10% where it's underpowered can be an annoyance. I recommend getting the most thrust you can afford... FinsandFeathers
Look for an add in the classifieds on this site coming soon if you need more than 40 to 55 lbs
Ralph Wiggum
Agreed. My mother-in-law has a 16.5" Alumnacraft with a 40lb on it. I despise it. It's fine...unless there is any breeze at all.I have the same boat as Jim Buck with a 55lb Terrova. My feelings are dead-on with his. Works great most of the time. I didn't want to add another battery, though, so I stuck with the 55lb.
NTW
I have a 71 lb motor guide for sale on the classifieds that may work for you. Much like the current "freshwater series" product. It is about 6yrs old but has not been used all that much. It functions perfectly but some things to consider.- it is cable drive which is desired for bass/muskie or trolling & casting applications but you need to have the room on a casting deck for it.- it is 24V so you need another battery.- 50" shaft
delmuts
I run a minnkota 74# 24 V on my 17' ranger. Power has never been a problem. One thing with the extra power is i'm running on a lower setting, so less draw on the battery.
wbliceman
i would go bigger i have that size motor on my 14' lund. works great for the set up i have but any heavier of a boat i would want a bigger motor
mn_bowhunter
Wow I must be underpowered! I have a 42 lb minnkota on a 16 foot alumacraft and it cruises at about 3mph. I can also move upriver on the wisconsin below spillways with flows exceeding 16000 cfs. I've never had a problem, and set it at about 3 on a 10 scale for musky casting. Granted bigger is better, but $50 is better than $500.
