High Speed Transducer

New2TheFly

Question

Does anyone have experience using Veliar's high speed transducers? I have been thinking about getting one with the suction cup bracket to easily swap in and out of boats. I'd like to know what others think about it. Good, bad, or ugly.

I used one that my buddy borrowed me and it worked great.....his was attacthed to a piece of wood and secured with a clamp but it did the trick for me the summer I needed it.....he originaly bought it for going to canada and using the resort boats. I could cruise across the lake and always know what depth I was in and when trolling I could see the fish marks everything that I needed.

Thanks for the feedback. Any particular reason you love it so much MNice? I'm curious how it will work open water jigging for walleye. Vexilar's HSOforum says a 19-degree ducer covers about 1/3 of your depth. So 30 Ft depth would cover a 10Ft area. Do you need to be close to the transom mounted ducer for it to read your jig?

That's probably not the best reason why you'd use the HS Ducer, I mean to try to jig in open water so you can see your offering and fish.

I use my HS ducer on my 14' Lund I keep at the cabin so I can read depth and locate deep Walleyes or Smallies. I just bring my Ice Rig Vex (wsmall battery in the case) and change to the HS ducer which has a mounting bracket to suction onto the transom.

It works great that way, but I really don't care if I see my bait or not, I can feel a bite on a Lindy style rig or a jig when they bite.

Chef is right, for open water fishing you're not really watching your bait on the screen like you are in winter fishing ---- for one thing, you're probably not fishing right under the transducer like you are in winter, and for another thing the boat will probably drift making it really difficult if not impossible to keep your bait in the transducer cone.

Instead, use the electronics in your boat to look for fish, structure, changes in bottom composition, etc. to position your boat in the right area.

I've used suction cup mounts before and they work great.

I had a hard time using my flasher in a boat.

What I found the most difficult was lack of history. Not really a big deal on ice but in open water, unless you are staring at your graph the whole time, it's only giving you an instant reading of depth. If you are watching where you are driving, or anything but staring at the flasher, you will miss things. For me I found it more of an annoyance than a tool.

If you wish a quick mount portable unit and to use your Vexilar Winter Flasher Pack, this is a good option. It will perform well on open water.

I have been running Vexilar flashers on my boats for 30 years, in many different configurations, including the portable option you wish to use. It is a good functional option for a portable unit application.

If you have a boat that will see use with this Vexilar FL unit often, than I recommend you consider the option of a Vexilar TK-kit, with the hi-speed ducer as it will be a better use of your money and time. The TK kit hi-speed option would be a permanent mount but very easy to switch on/off the boat as all the needed components are included in the TK kit.

All the features you enjoyed on the ice will be even more useful on open water. I will not run a boat without a Vexilar flasher on it. Even if I have a graph, I need the flasher to keep the graph.."Honest".
