Sorry I blew up! Advice needed.

Recommended Posts

So I had the unfortunate situation of my motor pretty much blowing up and needing replacement. Here are the facts:

*It is a 2003 2500HD 6.0 with 160k miles on it.

*It was to be listed for sale in the next month and I figured I could get about $7,500 on the low end.

*Used engine is coming in at $3800 installed. 88k on it.

*New engine is at $4800 installed. Not sure of the warranty.

What should I do?

*Salvage the whole dang thing for pennies?

*What would be the added value to a brand new engine on this chassis, what do you think it could list for?

Any help is appreciated.

Thats kind of a bad situation. Sorry to hear about it.

I guess I would go with a used motor since your trying to get rid of it. I guarantee that you will never get the money back from a new motor. Others on here may chime in with experience on that but I have never seen a NEW motor get more that a couple hundred bucks extra.

You can put a lot of money into a vehicle but you will never see it back like you should. A new motor doesn't guarantee the buyer that the transmission, rear end, ect will last. Thats why I say go with used. It will still run/drive just fine but you won't loose your @$$ completely on it.

I would go used. Even a savings of a grand is huge. Most likely the warranty will carry until you sell it. Just remember to sell the truck winkgrin

Here a list of whole priced engines (before shop's mark up):

Quote:
Price Year Mileage/Condition Stock #

$1,225.01 2003 114K 740_$UC199

$1,625.01 2005 88K 770_N91391

$1,375.01 2003 193K 770_N91573

$1,475.01 2004 109K 762_K92377

$1,550.01 2003 ?K 100_C83700

$1,475.01 2006 109K 700_D93129

$1,475.01 2004 120K 702_D93288

$1,475.01 2005 130K 770_N91431

$1,475.01 2004 140K 770_N91653

I would have to say $2000 for just the engine (with 88,000) from a shop is about right. You should get (and this will have an effect on price) a 6-12 month warranty with the used motor.

Maybe someone who has a labor guide handy can give and idea of the labor hours???

Some places even better than that! The kicker is a lot of places will not warranty the labor on a used engine so make sure you check that out also. One of our used suppliers takes care of any warranty issues at there facility. All we have to do is get the vehicle to them and they take care of the rest.

Long story Tyler, I'll just say you cant split a truck in half. Thanks for the advice guys, ordered a used motor with warranty, paid zero shipping, arranged for install by the same shop at a max of 15 hours, and will come in at a total of $2600.

That sound alot more reasonable!

    • got this tackled today took about 3 hours to get both sides done. Didnt even get to use a torch....   Thought I was golden with just jacking it up and I could get to everything but no luck. Had to remove the entire axle hub and brake assembly to get to what I needed. Was a pain but still better then taking off the entire pivot arm.    Axle bearings were already greased and in great shape thankfully. Got both leaf springs installed and its ready for the road again.   Probably going to have my electric brakes checked, I am not touching anything with the brake drums. Based on what I saw it doesn't look like my electric brakes have been working anyway. Brakes are nice to have if its slippery out
    • By The way that didn't work either!! Screw it I'll just use the cellular.
    • It’s done automatically.  You might need an actual person to clear that log in stuff up.   Trash your laptop history if you haven’t tried that already.
    • 😂 yea pretty amazing how b o o b i e s gets flagged, but they can't respond or tell me why I  can't get logged in here on my laptop but I can on my cellular  😪
    • I grilled some brats yesterday, maybe next weekend will the next round...
    • You got word censored cuz you said        B o o b ies….. haha.   Yeah, no… grilling is on hiatus for a bit.
    • Chicken mine,  melded in Mccormick poultry seasoning for 24 hours.  Grill will get a break till the frigid temps go away!
    • we had some nice weather yesterday and this conundrum was driving me crazy  so I drove up to the house to take another look. I got a bunch of goodies via ups yesterday (cables,  winch ratchet parts, handles, leaf springs etc).   I wanted to make sure the new leaf springs I got fit. I got everything laid out and ready to go. Will be busy this weekend with kids stuff and too cold to fish anyway, but I will try to get back up there again next weekend and get it done. I don't think it will be bad once I get it lifted up.    For anyone in the google verse, the leaf springs are 4 leafs and measure 25 1/4" eye  to eye per Yetti. I didnt want to pay their markup so just got something else comparable rated for the same weight.   I am a first time wheel house owner, this is all new to me. My house didn't come with any handles for the rear cables? I was told this week by someone in the industry that cordless drills do not have enough brake to lower it slow enough and it can damage the cables and the ratchets in the winches.  I put on a handle last night and it is 100% better than using a drill, unfortatenly I found out the hard way lol and will only use the ICNutz to raise the house now.
