Spark plug?

Recommended Posts

I have a two rear old Strikemaster and the sales associate at FF said this spark plug which is a Autolite Xtreme Start Iridium which replaces the Champion spark plug CJ8Y would work. The recommended plug should be a Champion CJ6Y according to the manual. Does anybody have any knowledge of this spark plug and will it work correctly? I still have it in the original package. I cannot find the correct CJ6Y anywhere.

I think Strikemaster has a package they sell that comes with the oil for the gas, the correct spark plug and a couple of other things for a minor tune up. I see them at Fleet Farm near where they sell the augers. If they have any left, I bet it has the correct spark plug for a Strikemaster auger. Gander or Cabela's would most likely have the same package. as well as any store that sells augers. By the way, did you try an auto supply store or a small engine repair shop for the plug? You could also get it off the internet. Google "CJ8Y Spark Plug" under shopping and you can find them for around $1.50 plus shipping.

Q: WHAT SPARK PLUG SHOULD BE USED FOR MY 2-CYCLE ENGINE AND WHAT IS THE GAP?

# A: On 2 HP Tecumseh models (i.e. TC-300 or TMO40XA model engines), use a Champion CJ6Y, but you may use a Champion CJ8Y. The CJ8Y sparks hotter which burns the gasoline more effeciently, since gasoline varies in quality. For 3 HP Tecumseh engines use the J17LM plug. Solo engines use a Bosch WSR6F or Champion RCJ-6Y. Robin engines use a NGK CMR6A.

The gap on the spark plug should be at 030 for the Tecumseh engine, and .019 for the Solo Engine. But they will both be running the same plug from Champion.

That was from Strikemasters web site. If the plug cross references to either the CJ6Y or the CJ8Y you are good to go. Personally I run the hotter in my strikemaster with good results. Brand preference is just that. I've used autolite, Champ, NGK, and I really can't tell a difference. I think a new plug of any brand will work better than a fouled plug of any brand. That's what makes it hard to differentiate IMHO.
