I used to do that all the time. Set out a tip up and drill 3 or 4 holes in different depths and hole hop for sunnies. You could also fish in a house if you have a spot where you know you will catch fish but if its a new area I like to move around a little until I find a hot hole.

Used to do that in Bemidji a lot. It's a great way to spend a day. Its a lot of fun when the flags fly, but in the meantime catching gills for the frying pan seems more productive and entertaining than sitting and hoping for flags!

There are several places on Minnetonka that my boys and I use that tactic. Plus on some of the smaller lakes around here. Just drill holes along the weedline and hop around for the sunnies until someone yells FLAG UP. Although, you said that jigging for pike is boring, and I have to disagree on that. When they move into an area, the jigging can be wild. No finesse to their bite, they slam it and you hope they don't take the rod out of your hands.
