They don't call Lake Winnipeg Big Windy for nothing!

Had the pleasure of heading out with a couple of good friends for a day of Greenback fishing on Lake Winnipeg.Set up the shacks and within a half hour fish on. A nice 24 to 25 inch walleye was iced and thoughts of numerous eyes were going through my head..then it was sauger after sauger after sauger, and probablythe smallest fish I ever caught. Seeing a pattern here. Where did all the walleyes go and where the heck did these 60 click winds come from . The shack was vibrating and jumping all over the place . Well the reason the walleyes disappeared was about to make sense. I got hit and hit hard...I thought I had the MONSTER of all walleyes on the end of my line..the El Whappo of El WHappo's ) Was I ever surprised when a very thick 41.5 inch Northern came up the hole...I was disappointed yet happy at the same time. The fish was landed on one of my lighter action rods with 4lb PINK (go ahead tease me) Fireline and a 1/4 oz Whistler jig. By 3pm the winds were so bad we had to pack it in for the day. Darrin took a few good shots for me on his wide angle lens (sorry if it looks 6ft long.lol) The lake was quite easy to navigate but some pretty good cracking was going on and a few big ridges showed up on our path on the way back.never a dull moment!

How much ice is up there? Did you go out NW of Selkirk? Went with a bunch of Fargo residents last year & caught somenice eyes. Hoping to get up there again once at least this year also. Just curious what the ice conditions were like.

there is 24" of ice on the lake now. Some nasty "cornflake" ice near shorelines. Very little snow right now and travel is good. the next snow storm is going to cause driving problems. There will be major drifts in some spots.

Fishing has been picking up with some trophies and good numbers being caught.
