problem with my strikemaster cutting ice

crappieday71

Question

i have a mag 2000 2 hp and ive been having troubles since the day i bought it.. i seem to have it running right and everything now but it seems to cut very well through half the ice then just stops cutting. I basically have to put my hole body weight on the motor to get it to continue to go down.. Ive tried every which way to drill a hole yesterday and nothing seemed to change.. any suggestions to what i should do or what my problem may be would be fantastic

I have the same auger what I have learned is that the bottom where the point is gets full of ice take your scoop and clean that area out that seems to work for me. It happens more when it's really cold and you drill one hole and it gets ice up in there good luck.

I have the same Auger with the same problem. Like Pheasantpro said take the scoop and beat the ice off the bottom of the auger point. It makes a big difference.

Yep same thing, remove the old ice, or gain some weight!! grin It could also be a bit of a bend in your lower drill unit and when it gets deeper in the hole it starts binding a bit?

Does your auger have a "V" blade at the very tip? If so, they are known to come with burrs on them from the factory, and can slow down your drilling. Mine did, and it took all of 5 minutes to fix it. I do not recommend hitting your blades with a metal ice scoop, as that can dull and nick the blades. If you don't have any other option, though, have at it.

With the auger turned off, flip it up and look closely at the tip. I've found the cutting edges on the "V" to be fine, but the very tip where they meet is where you want to look. If you can see or feel some burrs on the end tip, put on some leather gloves and grab a handfile. Be very careful to keep the cutting edges in good shape, and slowly work off the burrs while holding the file flat on the cutting edge. I did this and it made a world of difference.

While you are at it, inspect the other cutting blade and see if it too is in good shape. it can't hurt to give that a fresh edge, too, if it's been used for a while.

You may need a new set of cutting blades. It could have gotten damaged sometime when you have used it.

I would give Strikemaster a call to get this resolved as I am sure they can help you out.

I have a laser mag 10" and I always see people lifting the auger numerous times as well as leaning on them to cut. They should cut with no pressure or clearing the chips out of the hole. I know this doesn't answer any of your questions, but they really should cut like a knife through butter. I did have issues a few years ago, and changed my blades (minor...minor dings) and it made a huge difference.

i have a lazer mag express and mine will cut straight through some holes and others it will take a few minutes and this is with 10" of ice, i think with mine the angle of the blade is off so im going to try and put a shim under it like posted above... good tip

I have strikemaster 224 and sometimes it just stops cutting what I will do is just lean the auger in the hole from one side to the other and it will start cutting again. it is the white ice that clogs the blades up. one other thing I will do is hold the auger just above the ice open the throttle all the way and start cutting. I would not advise putting all your weight on the auger when your cutting as this could bend the fliting where your blades are conected.
