reddog
"Des Moines:The Iowa Department of natural Resources has changed the date when nonresidents may purchase hunting licenses in Iowa to begin on January 1. Previously, nonresidents could purchase a license beginning Dec 15th of each preceding year, the same as Iowa residents. The rule change became effective in October. Licenses will be valid from Jan 1, 2010, or on the date of purchase, until Jan 10, 2011.The onsale date change affects nonresidents only."This became effective in October, but they conveniently forgot to mention it in any publications.Im sure it doesnt effect many people, but I feel sorry for those who came to Iowa for the first time, hopeing to take advantage of the extended hunting days allowed by the previous law.I know South Dakota is the same way as Iowa used to be. Is Minnesota that way also?
scsavre
Thanks for the info, i have been wondering about it. That is too bad, it was a good deal to get the double up before.
Rooster Chaser
I called the IA DNR to find out the reasoning behind this. Was told that this change was made because it worked better with their electronic licensing. Weak excuse in my opinion. This on top of the raise in license price do not seem to be particularly friendly moves towards non-resident licenses. tweedlap
We need a Bullhead Stamp.. With the revenue raised we can have the DNR set up game checks on every road heading South in the hole. We should enforce a head on and on visable fin rule; too.Let's show them border jumpers what we think of their new rules.tweed
scsavre
It does seem like we are the nice ones as far as price for hunting and fishing. Maybe we should raise the price more on non resident fishing. For Iowa and others. For the North Dakotans, we better just charge them $100 and give them 2 weekends a year to fish. I believe MN still sells the most fishing licenses a year for non residents.
CaptainBly
I'm sure it has to with trying to generate some more revenue for the state. I myself have bought a non resident MN fishing license since I moved to SD. It's cheap. Raise the price I don't care. If a person really wants to fish or hunt in a different state they will. Tom7227
So much of Iowa has been pounded by bad weather for the last two years that I suspect that their bird populations are way down and so are their out of state license sales. Their budget probably is set with X number of dollars expected and they've probably missed that number. Trying to get the number back up. I doubt it's going to help that much cause I doubt anyone's going down there yet this season anyway.
CRAZYEYES
I agree, MN is pretty kind to non residents. Non resident licenses in SD have become kind of rediculous, ND restricts when non residents can hunt and I dont even want to look at what Iowa charges now because I know that it cost a fortune to deer hunt there. I wish that ND and SD would do what Nebraska does and have a reasonably priced 2 day non resident licence or something similar. I am willing to spend the dough on a hotel and local bars and everything else that goes with it but spending 200 bucks on a licence is kind of rediculous when I can usually only get away for a weekend or 3 days anyway. I dont want to see Mn follow suit and gouge non residents though because that only hurts tourism in general and thats something that I think a lot of states have forgotten. Augusta
Just think of all the habitat and hunting areas we could have here in MN if we all just stayed home and spent our money right here in MN......
CaptainBly
True, I come home on the fall quite a bit, SW MN. You don't see that many if any out of state plates drving around ar parked at any WMAs. Unless they are hunting with residents.
QueticoTim
I used to live in IA. In the last 8 years I think my out of state Pheasant license has gone from $65 to about $125. While the number of birds has declined. I really feel that IA is miss-managing this whole situation. Unless you have a superior product raising rates only drives away people. MN is way better on out of staters. For example the cost for an IA out of state fishing license vs. a MN out of state fishing license are essentially the same--yet the MN product is far superior. MN could stand to raise their rates a little, but for the most part if you compare sporting tourism revenue compared to the SD, IA, ND they far exceed those states. I think MN attitude is let's welcome out of staters we will more than make up the revenue in taxes on lodging, food, gas etc... Instead of taking the stance other states do and drive people away with a bitter taste in their mouth.Just my opinion, but I like how MN runs things a lot better.T
