Garage Door Openers

SkunkedAgain

Recommended Posts

Our 1960s opener finally died! That piece of junk was nothing but problems but it worked, until last week. I have two questions:

1) Are there good and bad openers or will a decent brand from Sears or Menards do the trick? (It's a light door on a 2-car garage)

2) Do the store installers do a good job or is it worth calling an actual door service to purchase and install the opener?

I'm going to have this installed, as I don't know a thing about openers and don't care to learn in this frigid cold.

The Chamberlain quiet belt drive ones are very nice, I have one and my bro has one. It is amazing to NOT hear it when you push the button.

I also have older chamberlain ones with chain, and they work great, but noisier than the new ones. Also the newer ones have different frequency so I cannot use my newer fobs/transmitters with the older opener, or vice versa.

My new one has better lighting options (motion detector) and also time and temp on the wall panel, which is nice.

Can't say much about who should do it, I had the older ones put in along with the doors from a door company, no problems in 9 years, and the new one went up with new door at cabin, by a contractor. Good luck.

If you haven't installed one in a long time you can expect it to take half a day or more. The assembly can be detailed and we all know how printed directions are combined with blurry drawings. Having said that, it can be done without problems but it's gonna be cold.

I think that Sears sells them and at one time had a flat fee to install them and it was way cheap. I'm pretty handy and a friend wanted me to do hers and there's no way that it would have made sense - $50 or someething like that. Give them a call.
