Strikemaster Fuel pump issue?

Jmnhunter

Question

Hey guys, i put some fresh fuel/amsoil in earlier in Dec to get the auger running, ran perfect. Went to the lake this past weekend got it started after a few extra pulls than normal; once it got running and i stayed on the throttle it ran good; but if i let off the throttle it would die; then once i started it again and let it run to break it in for the season, ran for 2 min or so and died. Started it again still took some effort to start got it running with throttle, and noticed if i held the auger any other way than up right it would die.

things i've noticed:

-took about 15 pulls to start (it usually should take 2-3)

-no fuel in fuel line

-when it started and died, the fuel line would empty instantly

-leaks some fuel from carb I believe

*carb looks fairly easy to get to (just empty gas tank, and dismantle tank?), i worked on my 15hp evinrude's carb/fuel pump this summer so I should be able to take a look -any pointers?

thanks

what kind of auger???? go to the engine web site---Techumsah??

print out a copy of owners manual with instructions on how to tear down the carb--------if that fails call the company. I called strikemaster when I was having problems with my auger and they were great

JMN. I have a Strike Master Express that is doing the same thing.

(2 H.P. Tecumseh) It wouldn't run at all, then I put a carb kit, and new plug in it. Now it is doing the same thing as yours, if I stay on the throttle it will run and cuts ice o.k. But if I let off the throttle it dies.

If you find a solution let me know what you came up with.

I am going to nurse it through the season, then I think I will send it to Strike Master in Big Lake. I have heard good things about their service.

Good luck.

By the sounds of things you need a couple things. I would recommend new fuel line as the "old" stuff gets hard and causes the fuel system to suck air and bleed back. Also rebuilding the fuel pump and carb are a simple task on a strikemaster. I had the same issues with mine and rebuilt a month or so ago and it now works better than new - also backing off the throttle stop will improve the performance of the auger itself.

Jmnhunter,

go to their web site. click on the customer service link on the side. click on owners manual. at the bottm of that page there will be area to click on recoils, speed control, carbs. click on the carb on and it will bring up the exploded views of the carbs they use on their augers.

took off the tank last night, noticed the gas was leaking from the fuel line that connects on top of the carb; i noticed it connects to a white plastic elbow that connects to the carb, well the plastic elbow had 2 cracks on the side of it. I planned on running to ace to grab a new fuel line and that plastic elbow -or in order to get that plastic piece, will that require me to buy a whole carb kit? it must have been sucking in air when i would start it
