Heater Cooker with 1# hissing/flare up when shutting down questions?

I just hooked up the heater/cooker in the garage for a few minutes so I could get some measurements on the inside of the portable house (non-heated/insulated garage)

While I was turning off the heater/cooker, it flashed and hissed with 6" flames coming off the top of it. Of course I was in the fish house with the door zipped up. Well, it went out after a few seconds.

I quickly unhooked the 1# propane tank and the tank was hissing. It would go away, but if I moved the tank, it would start hissing/leaking again.

Any ideas on what I should do with the tank? Ideas on why it happened? My guess is that the propane tank has been in the garage for a few weeks and was frozen. Other than that, I'm stumped.

propane tanks are funny when they get in below degrees. Had them leak in bucket before in side portable. Don't lay them on side, keep upright so liquid doesn't get in valve area and freeze. Seems that is a rule for transporting propane. Remember when filling 100# cyl. that they said to always transport upright as they would bleed liquid in the line.

Similar situation last night for me... Except I was hooked up to a 20# tank and used a 12ft hose. Mr. Heater cooker started fine, actually really easy, then flared up (as high as 5 ft and I was in the portable. Stayed running for about 10 min with the cooker valve off, but tank on. After several disconnect and reconnect attempts it finally failed all together. By this I mean it would not lite...Nite over.

It was later brough to my attention the LP inside the tank froze. I suspect we have the same issue???

Sometimes when it is very cold the valve on the 1# tanks will not seal. Hook it back up to your heater, torch, or what ever.
